Branná combines a rich local history with geological features, an educational trail, winter sports and brewing culture. If you are looking for a hotel, this range of themes can help you decide where to start: consider whether historic buildings, nature and outdoor activities, skiing or local brewing are most important for your stay. Each place and activity offers a different focus.

Kolštejn Castle and its architectural history

Kolštejn Castle was founded by the Wüstenhube family at the beginning of the 14th century. The first documented mention of its construction dates from 1301. At the beginning of the 17th century, the Žerotín family and the Lords of Vrbno built the chateau buildings in the middle and lower parts of the castle and transformed the complex into a comfortable Renaissance residence. The Černá věž (Black Tower), which still stands today, also dates from this period.

Visitors interested in architectural history can see several reconstructed parts of the Kolštejn complex, the ruins of the original Gothic castle and a historical introductory exhibition. Check local access information before your visit. This will help you place the current scope of the tour in the context of the complex's development, without conflating the Gothic castle and the later Renaissance reconstruction into a single building phase.

Church, Fojtství and pilgrimage history

The Church of the Archangel Michael also tells a story of change: it was originally built as a Protestant church between 1612 and 1614, under the name Zmrtvýchvstání Krista (Resurrection of Christ). In 1743 it was adapted for Catholic worship and rededicated to Saint Michael. These two dates mark distinct periods in its history.

Fojtství is another building with a clear history of development. The building was initially constructed as a single-storey structure at the end of the 16th century; about a century later, another storey was added. The two construction phases were therefore separated by a considerable span of time.

Mariánský pramen is the surviving relic of the former pilgrimage site of Branná, also known as Kolštejn. The pilgrimage church was closed and demolished in 1789, while the spring remained. Mariánský pramen has been restored. The easiest way to reach it is along the path from the railway station towards the Banjaluka forester's lodge; check local information about trail conditions in advance.

Educational trail and Pasák natural monument

The Pasák educational trail starts in Branná, below the railway station. This recreational route is 12.5 kilometres long and has 14 multi-themed stops. Its set length and number of stops provide a clear framework for exploring the trail's different themes.

Designated in 1982, the Pasák geological and geomorphological natural monument covers 2.5 hectares. It includes a rocky ridge below the Polomský potok stream, with frost cliffs, isolated rocks, rock overhangs and cryoplanation terraces. Pasák's distinctive rock formations also include a rock window, a rock mushroom and a rock slab. The prominent Pasák rock tower is associated with several local legends, including the tale of the petrified shepherd. As well as the route itself, Pasák therefore offers geological formations and local storytelling as distinct points of interest.

Skiing and brewing culture

The Branná ski resort lies at an altitude of 630 to 750 metres and has three slopes suitable for beginners and advanced skiers alike. As facilities and operations can change from one season to the next, check the information for your travel dates in advance.

The Minipivovar Kolštejn offers another way to get to know the town. At a tasting with a guided brewery tour, you can sample all the beers brewed there. The range includes pale and amber lagers as well as seasonal beer specialities. Your trip can therefore include a variety of interests: architectural and pilgrimage history, geological features, a designated skiing option and brewing culture.
