Pražmo between Beskydy trails and river valleys
Accommodation in Pražmo
Pražmo lies at the meeting point of the valleys of the Morávka and Mohelnice rivers and is a starting point for hiking and cycling trips in the Beskydy Mountains. The landscape, marked routes and local history offer different perspectives. This makes it possible to understand the town both through its activities and through its river and cultural history.
River landscape along the Morávka
The Morávka is a mountain river in the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy. In its entirely natural state, it has the character of what is known as a wandering river: it carries large amounts of sediment and exhibits pronounced lateral erosion. Sediment is material carried by the river; lateral erosion refers to the wearing away of riverbanks. While the valleys of the Morávka and Mohelnice describe Pražmo’s location, these two terms draw attention to natural processes along the river. In this way, a geographical overview and the river’s dynamics offer two distinct ways of seeing the landscape.
Hiking and cycling
Pražmo is a starting point for hiking and cycling trips in the Beskydy Mountains. Marked hiking and cycling trails pass through the town and connect it with nearby mountain centres and ridges. Describing it as a starting point explains Pražmo’s role in these activities; the trails add specific connections into the mountain landscape. A mountain ridge is the elongated upper line of a range; as a destination, it differs from a mountain centre.
Cycling around Pražmo offers quiet roads, forest tracks and more challenging climbs. The options differ both in their surroundings and in difficulty, so routes are not limited to a single type of terrain. Check trail conditions for a specific ride, as they may change.
Local history and places of remembrance
The parish church of St John of Nepomuk is a prominent landmark in Pražmo and dates from 1807 to 1817. A stone cross marks the site of the former wooden church. The church and the cross point to different historical reference points: the dates refer to the parish church, while the cross commemorates the former church site.
The municipality was founded in 1777 by Jan Nepomuk Ferdinand, Count Pražma. To do so, he separated a portion of the land belonging to Morávka and Raškovice. Land from both villages is therefore part of Pražmo’s founding history.
The memorial to the victims of fascism was ceremonially unveiled on 5 May 1946. Along with the municipality’s founding and the church’s construction dates, this provides another point of reference in the town’s history. Pražmo also contributed to the development of the Prašivá educational trail.
