Horní Lomná lies in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids, by the Lomná stream, and is considered a recreational area. The village combines the natural setting of the Mionší National Nature Reserve with religious sites, preserved folk buildings and mountain trails. This gives you several options for planning your visit: forest nature, religious sites or trails through the mountain landscape.

Nature Reserve and Landscape

The Mionší National Nature Reserve is the largest complex of Carpathian fir-beech forest in the Czech Republic; it is shared by Horní Lomná and the neighbouring municipality of Dolní Lomná. Old beech and fir trees grow in the reserve. The large amount of deadwood supports numerous rare fungi, beetles and birds.

According to a rule recorded on June 7, 2024, access to the educational trail on the edge of the primeval forest had been possible since 2015 only with a guided tour provided by the municipality of Dolní Lomná. Check the seasonal dates before your trip if you plan to visit the educational trail.

Church, Stations of the Cross and Marian Site

The Neo-Gothic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was built in 1894–1896 and consecrated on June 12, 1896. Above the church, the Stations of the Cross wind through a forest ravine and have a peaceful, meditative atmosphere. They are about 700–900 metres long and take 20–30 minutes to walk at a relaxed pace. This time estimate helps you include the Stations of the Cross as a clearly defined stop in your day’s plans.

Just a few steps from the church is the Lurdská jeskyně, with the Mariánská studánka. Pilgrims, tourists and local residents have been coming here for more than a hundred years. If you want to connect church architecture, a forest walk and a Marian site, you will find these themes closely linked at the church, the Stations of the Cross and the grotto.

Beskid Trails and Winter

Velký Polom is the easternmost peak over 1,000 metres in the Beskids, on the Czech-Slovak border, and an important junction for hiking trails to Severka, Skalka, Muřinkový vrch and Bílý Kříž. Horní Lomná also has numerous ridge trails for cross-country skiing; grooming and conditions can vary seasonally. This offers a choice between hiking trails with named destinations and ridge trails for cross-country skiing.

The Village Between Forest and Wet Meadow

The Kyčmol Natural Monument presents a different landscape: it is a small wet meadow in the valley of the Lomná River, in the southernmost part of the treeless Kyčmol area. In contrast to Mionší’s fir-beech forest, the focus here is an open meadow.

The village’s architectural heritage is also part of its character: numerous folk buildings have been preserved in Horní Lomná, particularly in the Horní Přeláč area. This adds another perspective on the village’s architectural styles alongside the Neo-Gothic church.
