Široká Niva – St. Martin’s Church, Town Hall and Landscape
Accommodation in Široká Niva
Široká Niva lies in the rolling landscape of the Nízký Jeseník and in the Opava Valley. The municipality combines a clearly defined architectural history with natural features within its boundaries: St. Martin’s Church, the Liechtenstein castle, now the town hall, the nature trail and the Kunov Nature Reserve each offer a different focus. Almost 72 percent of the municipality’s area is forested. During your stay, you can choose whether to focus mainly on the buildings in the village or on the municipality’s landscape features.
St. Martin’s Church and historic buildings
St. Martin’s Church is a parish church completed in 1721 and protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It is a single-nave, longitudinally oriented masonry Baroque building, with a prismatic tower on the central axis of the façade. A single-nave building has one main nave; the longitudinal orientation describes the alignment of the building. The grounds of St. Martin’s Church include a rectory dating from the 16th century, which was altered in the Baroque period and given an Empire-style façade. The different dates make the site an interesting place to observe several phases of construction.
Another historic feature is the Liechtenstein castle, dating from the 18th century, which now serves as the town hall. Široká Niva thus has two historic buildings with different functions: St. Martin’s Church is a parish church, while the castle is used by the municipality. There is also a statue of St. John of Nepomuk in the village. It adds another named monument to the area’s architectural history.
Landscape and natural features
The setting in the Opava Valley and the rolling landscape of the Nízký Jeseník defines Široká Niva’s landscape. The figure of almost 72 percent forest cover refers to the municipality’s area. The municipality also includes the Kunov Nature Reserve, designated in 1997. The protected silver fir Tlustá Berta (Abies alba) stands in the Široká Niva cadastral area. Kunov is a protected area, while Tlustá Berta is a single named tree: the natural features range from a designated area to a specific tree.
Nature trail and getting there
The Široká Niva nature trail runs through the village and its surroundings. At five stops, it provides information about the municipality’s cultural, natural and historic sights. The route therefore covers several topics rather than focusing on just one type of attraction. Check the condition of the nature trail locally before including it in your travel plans.
For regional train travel, consult the GW Train Regio timetable: it lists Široká Niva as a stop on line 313 between Milotice nad Opavou and Vrbno pod Pradědem. The timetable cited is valid from 14 December 2025 to 12 December 2026. Check current service before travelling.
When looking for a hotel in Široká Niva, you can choose what to focus on based on your interests: the buildings and monument represent the history of the village, while the landscape, nature reserve and nature trail offer further natural, cultural and historical themes. This allows you to choose a destination based on the topics that interest you most during your stay.
