Železný Brod lies in the Jizera Valley. The history of glassmaking, historic buildings and recurring cultural events give a stay a variety of possible focuses. If you are looking for a hotel, the reason for your trip can be a useful starting point for comparison—for example, a festival, insights into glassmaking or historic architecture.

Glassmaking, Collections and Hands-on Activities

The annual Skleněné městečko glass festival takes place on the third weekend of September. The program includes glassmaking demonstrations and creative workshops for visitors. If you are planning to visit for the festival, check the specific event dates before your trip.

With more than 400 exhibits, the Muzeum a galerie firmy Detesk documents the development of artisan glassmaking in Železný Brod from around 1920 to the 1990s. The Minimuzeum skleněných betlémů Železný Brod currently displays around 80 glass nativity scenes from the collection of Alena Kortanová. Visitors can also make their own jewelry in a creative bead workshop there, such as necklaces, bracelets or earrings. Workshop details may change, so check them before your visit.

The LAMPGLAS, s. r. o. showroom offers another way to experience glassmaking: visitors can watch glass being worked at a glassmaker’s torch. Together, these offerings showcase different aspects of the subject—from the craft process to collections and handmade jewelry.

Historic Districts and Buildings

Běliště is home to the ethnographic exhibition of the Městské muzeum v Železném Brodě. The wooden building dates from 1807; the exhibition is open to the public and comprises nine rooms. Each is devoted to an aspect of the history of Železný Brod and its immediate surroundings.

The historic district of Trávníky is home to listed folk architecture buildings. The log and Neoclassical buildings were constructed at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and retain a traditional character shaped by the Podkrkonoší region. A walk through the historic district is just under 1 km long. Also in Trávníky is the sandstone fountain dating from 1828, a technical monument.

Kostelní vršek is a remarkable Late Baroque ensemble. It includes the Church of St. James the Greater, built in the second half of the 18th century, a single-storey rectory dating from 1723 and an ossuary dating from 1765. Železnobrodská radnice also reflects several phases of construction: the Neo-Renaissance building was erected in 1890 to a design by architect J. Zeyer, and the left wing was added in 1909.

The wooden structure of the Železnobrodská zvonice explains an unusual architectural solution: two independent frameworks perform different functions. One supports the building’s exterior, while the other carries the suspended bells. Kostelík sv. Jana Nepomuckého Na Poušti was built in 1769 by Count Karel Josef Des Fours (1701–1775). The town thus brings together buildings serving different purposes and representing different periods, from a Late Baroque ensemble to Neo-Renaissance architecture.

Festivals and Planning Your Stay

Exhibitions and concerts are held several times a year at Kostelík sv. Jana Nepomuckého Na Poušti. Since 1997, the Svatojánská krojovaná pouť has also been held there every May; the specific dates may vary. The Železnobrodský jarmark is a different kind of event: it takes place annually on the second weekend of June and features numerous stalls selling refreshments and traditional products. If you are planning your visit around a specific event, it is advisable to check the latest dates.

The Železný Brod Tourist Information Centre provides information about the town and its surroundings, including trip ideas and details about train and bus connections. This can be helpful if you want to combine your stay with an excursion or find out about public transport connections.
