Tatobity by Kozákov: Nature and Local History
Accommodation in Tatobity
Tatobity combines natural landmarks at the foot of Kozákov with a distinct local history. The mountain, the ancient lime tree and the religious buildings give the village different points of reference. There is also a Christmas tradition and a geological site.
Location at Kozákov and the ancient lime tree
Tatobity lies at the foot of Kozákov. At 744 metres, it is the highest mountain in Český ráj and a clear landscape landmark for the village. Its regional context is also well defined: Tatobity lies in the Český ráj Geopark, which is listed by UNESCO, and near the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area. The mountain, the geopark and the nearby protected area are distinct points of reference for understanding the surroundings.
A special natural landmark is the Tatobitská tisíciletá lípa (Tatobity Millennium Lime Tree). It is estimated to be between 600 and 1,000 years old. Its shape is also remarkable: the hollow, gnarled interior has room for more than ten people.
The lime tree also gained recognition through public votes. In 2015, it won the Czech Tree of the Year competition. In the European Tree of the Year competition, it came second with more than 43,000 votes.
Buildings, literature and local tradition
The Church of St. Lawrence was rebuilt from 1714 and completed in 1753. Before that, a mostly wooden chapel had stood there since 1602. The rectory in Tatobity was built in 1884.
Another cultural connection links a structure to literature: the wayside shrine in Tatobity dates from 1776 and inspired Jan Neruda to write “Balada horská” (“Mountain Ballad”). The statue of the Virgin Mary known as Matička also has specific connections to the village and a local person. It stands in the upper part of Tatobity and was made by the local sculptor Zeman. It is dated to 1820, though 1867 is also sometimes given.
A local tradition is the Christmas Midnight Mass. Residents of the municipality and the surrounding area prepare it under the direction of Jaroslav Šťastný. If the mass is important to your travel plans, check the dates in advance.
Geology and regional context
The Tatobity quarry is an ignimbrite quarry and another geological landmark in the village. Together with its location at the foot of Kozákov and its inclusion in the geopark, it forms a distinct landscape setting. The Český ráj Protected Landscape Area is near Tatobity; it is distinct from the Český ráj Geopark, in which the village lies.
Putting Tatobity into perspective as a travel destination
If you are considering Tatobity as a hotel destination, you can start by weighing your interests: Kozákov and the lime tree offer specific points of reference for nature, while the church, wayside shrine and Matička connect to different chapters of local history. The Midnight Mass also adds its own Christmas touch. These themes help you understand Tatobity as a destination with landscape and cultural connections.
