Kunratice can be explored through several specific themes: the architectural history of the All Saints Church, the history of a chapel, the Tongrund memorial site, trails and a water reservoir. The annual Kunratická JamParáda may also be important when choosing when to travel. Depending on whether you are interested in architecture, outdoor activities or an event, these themes offer different ways to plan your stay.

All Saints Church: Architectural History and Location

The All Saints Church in Kunratice is documented as early as 1377, when a parish priest was mentioned there. Its architectural history includes several distinct phases: it was originally Gothic, was remodeled in the Baroque style at the end of the 18th century, and was altered again in 1879. For those interested in architecture, this sequence offers a concrete comparison between its Gothic origins and later changes.

The church stands on a low hill on the northeastern edge of Kunratice, at the settlement’s highest point, and is surrounded by a walled cemetery. Its location and architectural history therefore offer two different points of interest: the site places the building within the settlement, while its successive styles provide a historical perspective.

A Chapel with Several Building Phases

Another trace of the area’s church history lies in the fields east of Kunratice, near Tongrund. The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows was built there in 1847 by converting a gunpowder storehouse erected by French troops in 1742. This sequence shows how the building’s use changed: a military storehouse was later converted into a chapel. After 1900, Benedictines from Emmaus remodeled the chapel in the Beuron style. The building dates are thus accompanied by different uses and a clearly identified style.

Tongrund Memorial and Pond

The Tongrund memorial site can also be understood through its location and the reason for its commemoration. The Tongrund Memorial stands on the right-hand side of road III/03511 toward Frýdlant, just before the Tongrund Pond, also known as Totex. A memorial event is held at the monument every year, also honoring those who fell in other armed conflicts. The site thus combines specific directions with a commemoration that extends beyond a single armed conflict.

Exploring on Foot and by the Water

The green-marked KČT hiking trail from Frýdlant to Arnoltice passes through Kunratice. This route offers a specific reference point for planning a hike. You can discover Kunratice’s lesser-known sights on foot or on cycling trips, making hiking and cycling two different ways to get to know the local attractions.

A water reservoir within the municipality of Kunratice is also used as a natural swimming pool. This adds another topic to consider when planning your trip, alongside the buildings and trails. If you plan to go swimming, check the reservoir’s current use in advance.

Kunratická JamParáda in November

An annual event is the Kunratická JamParáda, a jam-making competition open to participants from the Czech Republic and abroad. The results are ceremonially announced on the first Saturday in November, and all competition entries are open to public tasting. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the current event date in advance. This lets you take the competition into account when choosing when to travel, while also exploring other aspects of the area.
