Kryštofovo Údolí: Nativity Scenes, a Church and Technical Monuments
Accommodation in Kryštofovo Údolí
Kryštofovo Údolí combines architectural history, nativity scenes and technical monuments with annual festivals. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different highlights: some are associated with a building, others with a fixed date in the annual calendar or a seasonal offering.
Church, Chapel and Bell Tower
The present-day Church of Saint Christopher was built in 1683–1684 by carpenter Michl Schöbel from nearby Žibřidice, together with his helpers. The church grounds include a Baroque rectory, a mortuary and a bell tower. There are no regular tourist tours of the church during the year; however, you can look inside through the glazed doors.
The Chapel of Saint Christopher can be reached from the town centre via a green-marked hiking trail. The path leads uphill into the woods. This makes access to the chapel different from the limited viewing opportunities at the church. If you plan to visit both places, keep these different visiting conditions in mind.
Nativity Scenes and the Hodinová věž
The Nativity Scene Museum displays more than 90 nativity scenes. Its collection also includes a mechanical Tyrolean nativity scene, created by carpenter Franc Pohl around the turn of the 19th century. The number of nativity scenes gives an impression of the collection’s breadth; Pohl’s mechanical work provides a specific example of an individual nativity scene that can be placed in its historical context.
Jírův betlém is different in form: this open-air nativity scene has stood in the town centre since 1999. It is 16 metres long, and its figures are up to 3 metres tall. Thus, an extensive museum collection and a large open-air nativity scene offer different aspects of the nativity scene theme.
The Hodinová věž is also located in the centre of Kryštofovo Údolí, in a former transformer station. The Hodinová věž has 14 bells. The building’s former purpose and its present-day name help explain what makes this place special, without conflating it with the history of the church or the nativity scenes.
Technical Heritage and Events
The Novinský Viaduct is 230 metres long and has 14 arches. It is a state-protected technical monument. The railway viaduct can be reached on foot from Kryštofovo Údolí via local paths and roads. For planning purposes, keep two details distinct: the protected monument’s structural features and the described access via paths and roads.
The festivals also differ in character and timing. The Údolský masopust is an annual masked and fancy-dress procession, accompanied by the Jizera folk ensemble. The Údolská pouť takes place every year on the last weekend of July and has been celebrated, with a few interruptions, since 1862. If you are travelling specifically for an event, check the exact date in advance.
Seasonal Offers and Getting There
The children’s ski area includes a ski school and a ski and snowboard equipment rental service. As seasonal services may change, check before travelling whether the ski school and rental service will be available on your travel dates. This offering has a different seasonal focus from the buildings and annual festivals.
Kryštofovo Údolí can be reached by public transport route 16, operated by the Liberec City Transport Company. The Kryštofovo Údolí and Novina railway stations are on the Liberec–Česká Lípa railway line. These details provide different options for travelling by public transport; check the relevant timetable before departure.
