Zdislava: Church Art, Monuments and Craftsmanship
Accommodation in Zdislava
Zdislava offers several specific points to consider when planning your trip: the Church of St. John the Baptist with its painted wooden ceiling, religious artworks and the Papyrea handmade paper workshop. There are also named high points, information about cycling routes and a railway station. If you are looking for a hotel in Zdislava, you can decide in advance whether culture, craftsmanship or a cycling trip will shape your stay.
Getting your bearings in the landscape
Part of Zdislava lies in the Ještěd Nature Park. North of the village rises the limestone hill Velký Vápenný, at 789 metres; to the east lies Špičák, at 686 metres. The difference in elevation is 103 metres. This lets you associate each high point with its location: the higher one is to the north, the lower one to the east.
Church and historic religious artworks
The Church of St. John the Baptist brings together an interior detail and a designated heritage site. The church preserves a unique painted wooden ceiling. The church, including its boundary wall, chapel and gate, is designated a cultural monument. The painted ceiling is part of the interior; the monument designation also includes the surrounding structures. The church’s concert tradition dates back to 1997. Check the specific dates of individual events before your trip.
The Marian Column with a depiction of the Assumption stands on a grassy area at a crossroads in the northeast of Zdislava. Designated cultural monuments include the statue of St. John of Nepomuk opposite the church, a column shrine decorated with reliefs, and a reconciliation cross in Zdislava. The U Obrázku forest chapel was a Marian pilgrimage site towards the end of the 18th century. The Zdislava archaeological site is designated as a UAN-I area covering the late medieval and modern-era village settlement with its church. The designation was updated in 2023.
Different aspects of local history come together here: the chapel’s historical role as a pilgrimage site at the end of the 18th century and the archaeological classification of the village settlement as dating from the late medieval and modern periods.
Craftsmanship at Papyrea
Another focus is craftsmanship. The Papyrea family workshop in Zdislava makes handmade paper and offers printing and bookbinding; the specific range of services may change. These three activities show different aspects of paper and bookmaking: producing the material, printing and binding. Tours and workshops are available by appointment. Request your preferred date before you arrive and confirm availability.
Cycling route and railway
When it comes to cycling routes, distinguish between two different locations. Before the railway crossing, cycling route No. 3046 branches off west towards Janovice v Podještědí. The marked long-distance cycling route No. 25 passes through the cadastral area of Zdislava. While No. 3046 is described by its turn-off, compass direction and destination, No. 25 refers to the cadastral area and not explicitly to the village centre. Check the signage and route before setting off, as both may change. Zdislava is also on the Liberec–Teplice railway line. Check the current timetable for your travel day for specific departures.
