Hamr Na Jezeře: Beach, Cycling Route and History
Accommodation in Hamr Na Jezeře
If you choose Hamr na Jezeře for a stay, you can shape your trip around different interests: the sandy beach in the pine park, Hamerské jezero, cycling routes or historic sites. The water, fishing, a circular trail and a cycling stage each offer a different focus. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide which of these aspects of the town matters for your trip.
Sandy beach, boat rentals and Hamerské jezero
The Pláž sports complex has a 230-metre-long sandy beach in a pine park. Boats and pedal boats are also available for hire in the complex; this service may be seasonal. If rentals are important to you, check in advance whether they are available during your travel dates.
Hamerské jezero is fed by a branch of the Ploučnice called Hamerská strouha. The lake is also a popular and attractive fishing spot. If you plan to fish, check the current rules in advance, as they may change.
Compare the circular trail and cycling route
The Hamerský okruh is a 9-kilometre circular trail through the area around Hamr na Jezeře. The second stage of the Ploučnice cycling route is different: it starts in Hamr na Jezeře and leads to Stráž pod Ralskem and Mimoň. The Ploučnice cycling route is signposted as Route 15; it runs from the source of the Ploučnice at the foot of Ještěd to its confluence with the Elbe in Děčín.
When choosing a route, two questions are key: Would you prefer a loop with a stated distance, or a cycling stage that starts in Hamr and leads to two named towns? Before setting off on a bike ride, checking current route information can help with your planning.
Děvín Castle, the chapel and local history
South of Hamr na Jezeře, beyond Hamerské jezero, lie the ruins of Děvín Castle, dating from the 13th century. The castle was founded before 1250 by the Markvartici family. In the 16th century, Hamr na Jezeře had a mill on the Ploučnice and several ironworks. The ironworks processed limonite mined at nearby Děvín and in the surrounding area. Děvín thus features both as the site of a castle and as the source of the limonite processed in Hamr.
The Neo-Gothic Chapel of Our Lady, Help of Christians stands on Křížový vrch above Hamr na Jezeře. It adds a different architectural feature to the castle ruins: Neo-Gothic religious architecture alongside a 13th-century castle. At the end of the 19th century, Hamr na Jezeře became a popular spa resort. The town’s history thus spans a medieval castle, ironworking and its late-19th-century spa-resort history.
