Horní Libchava: Routes, Castle and History
Accommodation in Horní Libchava
Horní Libchava brings together several features that can help you choose a travel destination: cycling and hiking routes, a Renaissance castle, historical traces and the Manušické rybníky natural monument. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can assess the character of the place based on whether you are most interested in routes, architectural history or the surrounding landscape. The routes differ in their markings, uses and courses; the historical traces differ in their construction periods and state of preservation.
Cycling and hiking routes around Horní Libchava
Cycle Route No. 211 runs through Horní Libchava and connects Kytlice, Dubá, Stružnice, Horní Libchava and Vojtěchov. The Varhany cycle route connects Česká Lípa, Horní Libchava and Kamenický Šenov; its course follows the former trackbed of a railway line. The two cycling connections can be distinguished by the places they link and their routes: No. 211 passes through Horní Libchava, while the former railway trackbed is a distinctive feature of Varhany. If you are interested in using a former railway route, this provides a practical point of reference when choosing a route.
The marked routes also differ in their courses and uses. The blue-marked hiking trail runs along the northeastern edge of Horní Libchava and leads from Česká Lípa via Manušice, Slunečná and Kamenický Šenov to Nový Bor. The yellow hiking and cycling route passes through the village and connects Česká Lípa, Dolní Libchava, Horní Libchava, Manušice, Skalice u České Lípy and Nový Bor. The points of comparison here are the markings, uses and location in relation to the village: the blue trail runs along the northeastern edge, while the yellow route passes through Horní Libchava.
Route conditions may change. Check the current route before basing your plans on it. The places named can help you distinguish between the different connections; however, a marking or route alone does not tell you how much time you should allow.
The castle and historical traces
Horní Libchava Renaissance Castle dates from 1574 to 1593. Another architectural point of reference is the impressive Fara maltézských rytířů, which has the traditional floor plan of a broad Baroque house. These are distinct architectural features: the castle’s Renaissance classification and the Baroque floor plan attributed to the Fara.
The cemetery in Horní Libchava was established in 1904 on the site of the former cemetery that surrounded the Church of St. James the Greater in the village center. This sequence connects the history of the present-day cemetery with the former burial ground at the church and provides a specific point of reference for the history of the village.
The now-vanished Klinštejn castle site dates from the 14th century. No masonry survives above ground; the visible remains at the site are an outer defensive ditch and an earthwork. This makes it distinct from the architectural features of the castle and the Fara: at Klinštejn, the ditch and earthwork are what bear witness to the castle site.
Natural monument and regional orientation
The Manušické rybníky natural monument includes areas within the cadastral district of Horní Libchava. It protects wetland and aquatic habitats and the species associated with them, particularly a population of the fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina). Those interested in the natural features of the area will find a specific focus here on habitats and the species that depend on them.
The regional setting can also be described by direction: the Lusatian Mountains stretch north of Horní Libchava, while the northern part of the České středohoří begins to the west. The area around Máchovo jezero lies nearby to the southeast. The former Ralsko military area in the vicinity of Horní Libchava is now a recreation area. These different points of reference add to the picture of the area without combining the marked routes, historic buildings and natural monument into a single excursion destination.
