Schönbach: Architectural History, Landscape and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Schönbach
Schönbach combines architectural and cultural monuments with landscapes and several cycling routes. Highlights include the late Romanesque St Andrew's Church in Luby, protected trees and routes for touring bikes and mountain bikes. If you are looking for a hotel in Schönbach, you can plan your trip around whether cultural history, landscapes or a particular cycling route is your priority. The routes differ in length, difficulty and type of bike – criteria that can help you choose your activities.
Architectural History and Monuments
St Andrew's Church in Luby is a late Romanesque building and one of the oldest ecclesiastical monuments in West Bohemia. The Romanesque tower is the church’s only surviving Romanesque architectural element. The Chapel of Our Lady is in Luby’s municipal cemetery. It was built in 1716, extensively reconstructed in 1993 and is listed in the Czech Central Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments.
The Marian Column of Luby is a stone column dating from 1699, featuring a distinctive double-sided Madonna and Child. The Statue of the Violin Maker commemorates a different subject: created in 1926, it was unveiled in 1927 in tribute to local violin makers and instrument makers. The column centres on a sacred image, while the statue recalls the area’s instrument-making tradition.
Landscape and Protected Trees
Most of Luby lies in the Lubská vrchovina. Its highest point reaches 675 m above sea level in the northern border area of the municipal territory. In Horní Luby, the approximately 700 m-long Zámecká Alley follows an old path, lined with ash, maple and oak trees. The trees along the alley were declared memorial trees in 2002. Four closely grouped, heavily branched beech trees on the golf course are also protected.
Vysoký kámen is a quartzite rock formation outside Luby’s cadastral area. The rock is easily accessible from Luby and offers panoramic views over Czech and German territory. This viewpoint therefore differs from the monuments and landscape features within the municipal area described here.
Cycling Routes by Length and Bike Type
The Lubsko nature trail starts at náměstí 5. května and has 17 stops; it can also be ridden by bike. Local Cycle Route 2132 is 5 km long, with detours extending it to up to 11 km. It is of moderate difficulty and suitable for touring bikes. The route starts at the Luby–Wernitzgrün tourist border crossing.
The Cheb–Luby section of National Cycle Route 23 is also of moderate difficulty and suitable for touring bikes, but at 36 km it is considerably longer. This lets you compare two touring-bike options by their stated route length. Local Cycle Route 2180 has a different focus: this difficult, 18 km mountain-bike route leads from Luby towards Opatov and Libocký Důl. It starts at Luby railway station, the terminus of railway line 146 Cheb–Luby.
A route to the Vysoký kámen Natural Monument is also described for mountain bikers and cross-country cyclists. A forest path leads there from the Pod Vodárnou junction; the rock is 3.5 km from the junction and offers views of Luby. Information about start points, length and bike type can help you distinguish this option from the touring-bike routes and the nature trail.
