Železnice is particularly suited to travellers who want to include architectural history and a specific cultural programme in their stay. The historic centre, the Church of St Giles (sv. Jiljí) and the local museum represent different periods; hiking and cycling routes add activities in the surrounding area.

Old Town and architecture

The historic centre was declared an urban conservation area in 1990. After the great fire of 1826, Železnice was rebuilt according to plans by master builder Jan Hertner in a unified Neoclassical style. Much of this development has been preserved, forming a unique urban ensemble from the Empire period. This continuity gives a city walk a clear architectural focus.

On Svobody Square, the town hall is a cultural monument; the Oldřich Prášil Mill is also among Železnice’s cultural monuments. The Church of St Giles (sv. Jiljí) offers another perspective: its first written mention dates from the 13th century. It was remodelled in the Baroque style between 1727 and 1739, using original Romanesque ashlar blocks in the tower. The church thus brings together early written records, Romanesque building elements and Baroque remodelling.

Museum and crafts

The Vlastivědné muzeum a galerie v Železnici is housed in an Empire-style building dating from 1816, next to the Church of St Giles (sv. Jiljí). The archaeology exhibition reaches back to the Neolithic, while the palaeontology exhibition covers the Palaeozoic. Another exhibition focuses on the Prussian-Austrian battle of 1866, fought in the fields near Železnice. The museum therefore covers archaeological, palaeontological and military-historical topics, while the neighbouring church building has its own connection to the town’s architectural history.

At the Roubená chalupa, visitors can try spinning on a spinning wheel and watch weaving demonstrations. The interior is accessible to visitors with limited mobility; a separate visit to the cottage can be arranged. Demonstrations and hands-on activities are part of the visitor offering, which may vary. Check the current options and arrange a separate visit, if desired, before your trip.

Walk and orientation

The Naučná stezka po městě Železnici is a city walk featuring numerous questions and a final riddle. The accompanying brochure is available free of charge at the Kupecký krám in the Vlastivědné muzeum v Železnici. The Kupecký krám serves as a tourist information point for Železnice and the surrounding area. You can combine the walk with information about other attractions in the town and its surroundings.

The history of transport can also be placed in context: Železnice gained a railway connection in 1903, when railway services began on the Jičín–Turnov line. For current connections, check the latest timetable rather than assuming that the historical information reflects today’s train services.

Walking and cycling routes in the surrounding area

Železnice lies on the edge of the CHKO Český Ráj Protected Landscape Area and is a starting point for hiking routes. The nearby and wider area also offers cycling routes. These distinctions in location are useful for planning: hiking routes start in Železnice, while the cycling routes explicitly include the wider area as well. A nature trail about the Battle of Jičín, fought on 29 June 1866, also runs through the area.

A cycling and pedestrian link between Valdice and Železnice is planned. It is intended to be a shared, illuminated path for pedestrians and cyclists, extending as far as the local road in Těšín. Before planning a specific trip, check its current status and do not assume the link is already open for use.
