Neděliště: Architectural History and Places of Remembrance
Accommodation in Neděliště
Neděliště brings together architectural history, small religious monuments and remembrance of the 1866 war. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the castle display different architectural features; two Baroque sandstone works stand in the village square. There are also three war graves, a regimental monument and a wayside shrine on the outskirts. Those wishing to make their stay more active will also find a public multi-purpose sports court and a regional cycling route that passes through Neděliště. Architecture, memorial sites and physical activity each add their own distinctive note.
A church with several building phases
The history of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary dates back to the mid-12th century. Its present form shows Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque building phases. The single-nave building is surrounded by an enclosure wall with two gates and has been a protected monument since 1958. These features link the floor plan and the surrounding wall with a long architectural history. The crypt is also part of the church’s history: it served as the family tomb of the estate’s owners. Visible changes to the building thus stand alongside the crypt’s former function.
The castle and Baroque works in the village
The castle in Neděliště is a one-storey building with a mansard floor above and a double roof. A stone Baroque portal leads into the entrance hall. The building’s roof shape and a specific detail at the entrance are both notable features. After the well was removed, the castle courtyard was turned into a park.
Two Baroque sandstone works stand in the village square. The cross depicts the Crucified Christ; the cross and its pedestal were made in 1726. Also located there is the sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, erected in 1729. The two works showcase different themes in Baroque sculpture: the cross depicting the Crucified Christ and the statue of the saint.
Places of remembrance of 1866 and beyond
Three war graves from the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 are located in the cemetery by the church. They are associated with the Battle of Hradec Králové on 3 July and were renovated in 2023. Near Neděliště, a sandstone monument also commemorates the Austrian Artillery Regiment No. 6. It was erected and solemnly consecrated on 24 August 1867, directly at the site of the fighting. It also serves as the final resting place of the soldiers buried beneath it. The cemetery graves and the regimental monument offer distinct points of reference for remembering the war.
Another monument stands on the outskirts, beside the district road from Světí. The stone wayside shrine has a square base, a round shaft, a superstructure and a small chapel. It was erected in memory of Matěj Buzek, who died of the plague in 1712. It thus commemorates an individual life and a different event from those marked by the war graves and the regimental monument.
Sports court and regional cycling route
The public multi-purpose sports court in Neděliště is intended for ball games for all age groups. These include, in particular, small-sided football, handball, volleyball, nohejbal and tennis. An online booking system shows availability and allows reservations. Since availability and booking procedures may change, it is advisable to check current availability and the applicable conditions before visiting.
Those wishing to cycle can consider the regional circular route through the 1866 battlefield area. It is 33 kilometres long, takes about six hours and passes through Neděliště, Sendražice and Lochenice towards the Elbe riverfront in Hradec Králové. The distance and approximate duration apply to the route as a whole; they offer a different time frame from a visit to the local sports court. The places mentioned and the direction along the route help convey the regional character of this cycling tour.
