Markvartice U Sobotky is particularly characterized as a destination by its sacred architecture, protected cultural heritage, and archaeological traces. The village brings together a parish church documented since the Middle Ages and Baroque architecture with evidence of early settlement and a Celtic place of worship. Cultural events at the church and a green-marked hiking trail through Markvartice are also part of the picture. When choosing a hotel for your stay, these themes can help you decide whether local history, architecture, or hiking should be the focus of your trip.

Church of St. Giles and Monument Ensemble

The Church of St. Giles is documented as a parish church as early as 1348. It acquired its present appearance through a Baroque renovation in the second half of the 18th century. The two dates refer to different aspects of the church: its documented medieval role as a parish church and its later architectural form.

The church’s cultural monument complex also includes the mortuary chapel. The entire complex is listed in the Czech Republic’s register of cultural monuments. This means the church can be seen not only as an individual historic building, but also as part of a protected ensemble.

Linden Trees and Archaeological Traces

The Markvartické lípy were planted along the wall at the beginning of the 18th century, at the same time as the church was built. They were added to the heritage register in 1996. The trees add another connection to the period when the ensemble was created, complementing the church’s history.

Southwest of Markvartice, the Celtic place of worship at “V šancích” can be identified by its surviving ramparts. The alignment of the ramparts is interpreted as indicating that sunrises and sunsets along their axes are intended to mark the equinoxes, solstices, and Celtic festivals. This interpretation is part of what makes this archaeological site distinctive.

Archaeological evidence can also be found within the built-up area: it contains the remains of a stronghold mentioned around 1340 and abandoned after 1345. An early medieval settlement has also been identified in the village center. These finds offer insight into different early periods, without requiring the existence of a visible fortress ruin today.

The Markvartice reconciliation cross is described as the oldest known cross in the Český ráj. A preserved two-storey house with an arcaded gallery also stands near the church. Together with the church, it represents another form of historic architecture in the village.

Cultural Events and Hiking Trail

Since 2009, the Church of St. Giles has hosted concerts such as “Hudba z ráje,” “Noc kostelů,” and an Advent concert, as well as other cultural events. The events help support the preservation of the church. If you would like to include an event in your trip, check the specific dates in advance; individual dates may vary.

A green-marked hiking trail runs through Markvartice from Sobotka toward Staré Hrady and Libáň. If you plan to follow the trail, check the current markings on site. The named destinations and the route through the village offer a specific hiking option for planning your trip, without specifying a walking time.
