Podhradí U Jičína: Loreto and Baroque Heritage
Accommodation in Podhradí U Jičína
Podhradí U Jičína lies on the slopes of Veliš, combining a distinctive landscape setting with a strong focus on Baroque cultural heritage. The Loreto Chapel is part of the Mariánská zahrada; alongside it, the Chapel of the Guardian Angels and the sculpture ensemble of Christ Pantocrator (Eupator) represent different forms of sacred art. The Veliš setting adds an archaeological and landscape perspective to the local monuments. If you plan your stay around history and architecture, you will encounter both individual buildings and a broader cultural context here.
Loreto Chapel and Mariánská zahrada
The Loreto Chapel near Podhradí was built in 1694 to a design by Jean Baptiste Mathey. It is an integral part of the Mariánská zahrada, a continuous Baroque landscape composition that František Josef Schlik had laid out in stages.
Unusual features of the Loreto include a roof hatch and a roof surface whose construction makes it possible to walk across the entire area. From there, the view extends over the former Schlik estate and the Jičín Basin. This connects a specific architectural detail with two named landscape areas and adds a visual dimension to the history of the Loreto.
Other sacred buildings
The Chapel of the Guardian Angels was built in 1720 in the Baroque style as a hexagonal structure crowned by a dome; the design is probably by J. Santini. “Hexagonal” refers to the shape of the building, while the dome forms its upper section. After the restoration, the chapel was intended to be open to the public for liturgical events and on request. Check locally before your trip to see whether a visit is possible.
The Christ Pantocrator (Eupator) ensemble offers a different accent. It is a late Baroque sculpture of regional significance by an unknown artist and is listed as an immovable cultural monument in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments. This named work brings style, regional significance and monument status together. For those interested in culture, the sculpture adds another expression of the Baroque to the chapels.
Veliš: regional cultural history
On the southern slopes of Veliš, the Boží muka are among the oldest monuments of their kind in the region; some are partly overgrown. The Veliš archaeological site also preserves the ruins of a castle on a distinctive basalt hill near Jičín. Parts of the enclosure, the remains of two buildings and a very deep well have survived. Looking towards Veliš broadens the subject from sacred heritage to archaeological traces of a castle.
A cycling route as a planning option
International Cycle Route No. 14 (Berlin–Prague) connects Jičín with Dětenice via Podhradí and Veliš. Check its route before cycling if you plan to include it in your itinerary. The route and the monuments serve different purposes: the route places Podhradí on a named itinerary, while the buildings form the town’s cultural and historical focus. This can help you decide whether the cycling route or Baroque history is your main interest for the trip.
