Discover Bašnice
Accommodation in Bašnice
Bašnice combines a protected woodland landscape with traces of history and a cycling route. Bašnický les, west of the village, is home to a nature reserve and Slavic burial mounds; in the village, a stone cross and a memorial to those who fell in the First World War add further points of interest. A public playground and the library complement the local amenities. This gives you several distinct themes to explore when planning your trip: nature, local history, cycling and community facilities.
Local history: the name and former fortress
Bašnice was formerly also known as Bašněves. The former fortress is an important historic landmark. The first record of it dates from 1499; by 1542, it had already been abandoned. The fortress has not survived. According to tradition, it stood near the bridge over the Bašnický potok and not far from the bell tower.
Cross and war memorial
Two memorial sites mark different places and periods. The stone cross stands on the eastern edge of Bašnice, at the crossroads towards Milovice u Hořic. It dates from 1767 and was restored in 2009. The memorial to those who fell in the First World War is on an open area in the village centre, at the crossroads towards Bříšťany. It is dated 1928; the granite plaque dates from 1921. This memorial was also restored in 2009.
Bašnický les: nature reserve and burial mounds
Bašnický les lies west of Bašnice and was designated a nature reserve in 1990. The woodland contains Slavic burial mounds dating from the 9th century. They belong to a much earlier period than the first record of the fortress in 1499, bringing a nature reserve and early history together at the same named site. The protected status and archaeological traces are distinct aspects of the woodland. Check local access conditions before visiting.
Cycling through Bašnice
For cyclists, the “Zámecká cyklotrasa Hořice” route passes through Bašnice between Milovice and Dobrá Voda u Hořic. The route is suitable for trekking bikes and, potentially, road bikes; it follows paved roads. If you are choosing a bike, the types mentioned and the paved surface provide concrete points of reference. Check current cycling information before setting off, as the route and surface conditions may change.
Playground, library and regional context
The public playground near the Sokolovna was built in 2013 and is intended for children aged 3 to 12. If you are planning a visit with children, the age range is a useful starting point; check the current usage rules and operating conditions before you go. Borrowing books from the Bašnice library is free. If you would like to use it during your stay, check the current service arrangements in advance.
Bašnice lies in the Podchlumí microregion. There, sandstone deposits shaped local architecture and provided a livelihood for the stonemasons and sculptors who worked in the area. The connection between geology, architecture and craftsmanship offers a regional context that extends beyond individual sights. Podchlumí thus adds a perspective on the microregion’s building culture to the specific local themes.
