Sobotka lies on the edge of the Bohemian Paradise. For your trip planning, this connection to the landscape goes hand in hand with a specific selection of cultural themes: Humprecht Castle, with its distinctive design; the Fráňa Šrámek Museum, with its literature and multimedia exhibition; and the Údolí Plakánek educational trail. Depending on your interests, you can explore architectural history, the work of a writer, or a protected landscape.

Humprecht Castle and Vernacular Architecture

Humprecht Castle was built by Italian architect Carlo Lurago between 1666 and 1668 as a summer and hunting residence for Count Humprecht Jan Czernin of Chudenitz. Its elliptical ground plan and crescent moon roof finial distinguish it from other aristocratic residences. Its design can therefore be recognized by two distinctive features: the shape of its ground plan and the unusual roof crest. The visitor experience includes an observation gallery on the second floor. It is 13 meters high and offers views of notable landscape features in the Bohemian Paradise. At Humprecht, distinctive architecture and views of the surrounding landscape come together.

The Šolcův statek, dating from 1811, offers a different perspective on building history. It is one of the best-preserved examples of vernacular architecture in the Bohemian Paradise. In contrast to Humprecht, which was built as an aristocratic residence, the farmstead represents a different architectural tradition. The two buildings can thus be considered in terms of their different uses and building histories. The Šolcův statek is also home to the Karel Samšiňák Gallery, which gives the farmstead a cultural use.

Literature, Exhibition and Interior Art

The Fráňa Šrámek Museum presents a modern exhibition that combines literature, space, and a multimedia experience. It includes the writer’s original study, his personal library, and a poetry hall. Personal workspace, books, and a dedicated space for poetry are thus presented side by side. The exhibition’s distinctive focus comes from combining literary themes with the setting and multimedia presentation.

The museum is located right on the square, in Sobotka’s municipal information center. This location provides a specific point of reference for planning your trip. The Fráňa Šrámek Museum focuses on literature and the writer himself, while Humprecht Castle and the Šolcův statek place the emphasis elsewhere, on building history and architecture. When planning your trip around particular themes, you can weigh these different cultural experiences against one another rather than treating the sights as a single, uniform offering.

The Church of St. Mary Magdalene and its rectory offer another detail of cultural history: the church has an exceptional late Baroque interior created by the Jelínek sculptors’ workshop in Kosmonosy. The workshop connection draws attention both to the period style and to the origins of the sculptural work. The church thus complements the themes of architecture and literature with a specific feature of its interior.

Landscape on the Edge of the Bohemian Paradise

The connection to the landscape can also be explored in more detail: the Údolí Plakánek educational trail passes through the part of the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area that belongs to Sobotka. This offers a different way to experience the landscape than the observation gallery at Humprecht Castle. From the gallery, you can look out over notable landscape features in the Bohemian Paradise; the trail passes through a part of the protected area that belongs to Sobotka. This comparison can help you decide what to focus on during your trip: if you are mainly interested in architectural forms and historical uses, the castle and farmstead take center stage; if you are interested in literature, the museum offers a focus of its own; and if you want to connect with the protected landscape, the educational trail is a fitting choice.
