Čistěves: Nature Trail and the History of Svíb
Accommodation in Čistěves
Čistěves lies in a varied, hilly landscape and is associated with Svíb Forest and the history of the 1866 Battle of Hradec Králové. The Naučná stezka Les Svíb nature trail starts in Čistěves. This makes the village a concrete starting point for travelers interested in the landscape and its history.
Location and Getting There
Čistěves lies about 12 kilometers northwest of Hradec Králové, in the direction of Jičín. The nearest train stop is in the neighboring municipality of Sadová, three kilometers northwest of Čistěves, on line 041. In the center of Čistěves, there is a bus stop at the intersection of two class III roads. These details provide different reference points: Sadová is the location of the nearest train stop, while the bus stop is in the center of the village. Hradec Králové provides a broader geographical reference point.
Nature Trail and Memorials
The Naučná stezka Les Svíb nature trail takes about 2.5 hours to walk. This approximate duration can be used as a guide when planning your day around the trail itself. If you plan the trail as a separate activity, it gives you a time estimate for this part of your stay.
In the center of Svíb Forest is the Avenue of the Dead, where thousands of soldiers from both opposing sides fell. At the edge of the forest stands the monument to the Austrian 8th Battalion of Field Chasseurs. It commemorates the 1866 Battle of Hradec Králové. The two historical points of interest are located in different places: the avenue in the center of the forest, and the monument at its edge.
The monument to the Austrian 8th Battalion depicts an Austrian field chasseur from the battalion, larger than life and carved from Istrian limestone. It was made from a design by Viennese professor Viktor Tilgner. Both the figurative design and the material used, as well as the designer, are part of the monument's story.
The Pruský IR 27 monument stands at its original location. It takes the form of a pylon topped with crossed cannons and bears inscriptions in Czech and German. By comparison, the larger-than-life figure is the focal point of the 8th Battalion monument: the two monuments therefore differ in their design and visible details.
There are more than 120 crosses in the Svíb area.
Landscape and Event
The Šust fishpond is in the western part of the undeveloped area; it forms the local biocenter LBC 1. Part of Svíb Forest is designated as the regionally significant biocenter RBC 983 Svíb. These designations refer to different scales: a local biocenter by the pond and a regional designation for part of the forest. Together with the hilly landscape, these features give the village a landscape-related appeal alongside its historical focus.
The 18th edition of Rozsvícený Svíb took place in 2024. The program for that edition traditionally included a field mass and a commemorative ceremony at Myslivec. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the dates in advance.
