Úvaly: Viaduct, History and Trails
Accommodation in Úvaly
For a trip to Úvaly, you can explore the town through its buildings, local history and routes into the surrounding area. The Devět kanálů railway viaduct adds a technical landmark; the church and statue point to different historical contexts. There is also the Městská stezka Úvaly, an educational trail, and the Skara castle ruins. This combination helps you plan your stay around specific sights and routes: you can distinguish between a structure with precise measurements, historic sites, archaeological traces and a route with a viewpoint as its destination.
The viaduct and the path along the Výmola
The Devět kanálů railway viaduct is 135 metres long and up to 13 metres high. A paved path passes beneath the viaduct and follows the Výmola stream back to the other end of the square in Úvaly. The measurements give you a sense of the structure’s scale, while the path places the viaduct within a specific stretch between the stream and the square. This gives you an idea of both the size of the railway structure and the way along the route described.
Church, statue and mill in the centre
The Roman Catholic Church of the Annunciation (Zvěstování Páně) is a cultural monument and acquired its present-day Baroque appearance after a renovation completed in 1724. The statue of Archbishop Arnošt z Pardubic stands in Arnošt z Pardubic Square; it was unveiled on 30 June 1869. The two dates relate to different events: the completion of the church renovation and the unveiling of the statue. Another local landmark is Prokůpkův mlýn, also known as Dolní mlýn or Sýkorův mlýn. The mill is in the centre of Úvaly, a short walk from the railway station. The three names refer to the same mill site; the station is also the starting point of the Městská stezka.
The Městská stezka and Vinice lookout tower
The Městská stezka Úvaly starts at the railway station, crosses the square and continues into the countryside. As an educational trail, it introduces visitors to the history, notable buildings and places of Úvaly and its surroundings; it also leads to the Vinice lookout tower. The distance from the square to the lookout tower is about 650 metres, with an elevation gain of approximately 50 metres. The distance and elevation gain describe different aspects of the route. If you plan to include the lookout tower in your stay, you can take both figures into account separately.
Skara: castle ruins above the Výmola
Skara lies southwest of Úvaly, on a broad, promontory-like hill above the Výmola stream, and is a castle ruin. At the site, a rampart-like remnant of the surrounding fortification and traces of a building with at least two rooms, probably a palace, have survived. The identification of the building remains a supposition; the fortification remains and building traces are distinct features. Unlike the church, with its renovation history, and the statue, with its unveiling date, Skara’s historical significance is shaped by its terrain and archaeological remains. This gives you different points of reference for your interest in local history: dated events at the church and statue, and the topographical setting and surviving traces at the castle ruins.
