Discover Nový Knín
Accommodation in Nový Knín
Nový Knín combines traces of gold mining with historic buildings and several hiking trails. When planning your stay, you can choose from a range of different interests: the town’s history, gold mining, or trails through the region along the Kocába.
Gold history at the Muzeum zlata
The Muzeum zlata Nový Knín is housed in a historic building dating from the 15th century on Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad. The museum also serves as a tourist information center. If you are planning to request specific information there, it is best to check the services available in advance.
One of the themed routes also starts at the museum: the Naučná stezka Nový Knín a okolí passes by mine tunnels and has ten information panels. It presents the history of gold mining and gold extraction in the area around Kocába and Nový Knín. Mining history is therefore the focus of this trail; starting at the museum gives you a convenient point of departure for your visit.
Church, fountain, and square
Another historic landmark is the Kostel sv. Mikuláše church. The former church burned down to its foundations in the town fire of 1537; it was rebuilt in 1652. The stone-built church houses a crypt for the town’s primators.
On Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad stands a fountain made of blocks of stone, dating from 1837. Several benches invite you to sit beside the fountain. In summer, three old lime trees provide shade. In addition to being the starting point for the Naučná stezka Nový Knín a okolí, these details connect the square with the town’s history and offer a place to take a break.
Compare hiking trails by length and theme
A yellow-marked hiking route passes through Nový Knín and ends at Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad. It is about 16 km long. Compared with the Naučná stezka Nový Knín a okolí, it offers different details to consider when planning: its approximate length and its route through the town to the square. By contrast, the themed trail starts at the museum and uses its panels to present the history of gold mining. Trail markings and conditions can change; check the information before setting out on your hike.
The Naučná stezka Kozí Hory – Libčice also focuses on traces of mining. It has eight stops and passes by mine tunnels and mining subsidence areas. The information on its length differs: one official route listing gives 18.6 km, while another lists 13 km. If the distance is important for your plans, compare the route information before setting out.
The Kocába and the region’s gold mining
The Hadí řekou – údolí Kocáby route follows much of the most scenic section of the Kocába between Nový Knín and Štěchovice. The region’s connection with gold mining goes back a long way: for centuries, the Kocába and its immediate surroundings were known as a gold-bearing area. The area known as the Štěchovický zlatonosný revír stretches between Nový Knín and Štěchovice and extends as far as Třebenice. This makes it possible to explore the history of gold not only through individual stops, but also in its wider regional context.
