Malý Újezd: Discover Village History and Nature
Accommodation in Malý Újezd
If you choose Malý Újezd as your destination, you will find several distinct themes: local history at the village square, the Pšovka River and its wetlands, paths towards Jelenice and Vavřineč, and transport links through the village. When planning your stay, you can easily consider these aspects separately: the village centre tells the story of its buildings and community, while paths and protected areas offer different ways to enjoy nature and recreation.
Village Square and Local History
The village square is home to a granary dating from 1840, which the municipality describes as a landmark of Malý Újezd. The square is also home to the neo-Gothic Chapel of the Most Sacred Heart, dating from the early 19th century. It was renovated in 2016 and subsequently reconsecrated. A memorial to the victims of war stands in front of the chapel.
The first documented mention of Malý Újezd dates from 1517. Together with the different dates associated with the chapel, granary, and renovation, this offers a broad view of the village over time: from its first written mention through older buildings to the chapel’s renovation in 2016. The village square brings together architectural history and remembrance of the victims of war.
The Pšovka River and Protected Nature
The Pšovka River flows through Malý Újezd. The protected natural monument Dolní Pšovka also includes the cadastral area of Malý Újezd and protects small watercourses, bodies of water, and the associated wetlands. The river flowing through the village and the protection of various types of waterways and wetlands thus offer distinct perspectives on the landscape.
The significant Polabská černava National Nature Reserve, established in 1946, lies near the Pšovka River. It lies partly within the cadastral area of Jelenice, but mostly within that of Mělnická Vrutice. In the nearby area of Jelenice u Mělníka, Polabská černava protects calcareous fens and seasonally wet meadows. These fen and meadow habitats complement the waterways and wetlands that are the focus of Dolní Pšovka. The nearby Kokořínsko Protected Landscape Area is easily accessible to visitors and offers numerous opportunities for recreation and sports.
Recreation, Walks, and a Cycling Route
Jelenický plácek has a children’s playground, an outdoor fitness area, and a recreation area. Residents use the path to Vavřineč, lined with a poplar avenue, for walks. Cycling Route 8171 runs from Mělník through Malý Újezd to Jelenice. The destinations help distinguish the routes: the cycling route leads to Jelenice, while the poplar-lined path leads to Vavřineč.
Two rest areas have been built: one along the path from Jelenice to Vavřineč, and another in Vavřineč on the way to the forest. The rest areas in Jelenice and Vavřineč provide facilities for cyclists, mothers with children, and older people out for a walk. Rest-area facilities may be changed or replaced; check their current status if you have a specific need.
Plan Your Journey
The Lysá nad Labem–Ústí nad Labem railway line runs through Malý Újezd. A bus service connects the village with Mladá Boleslav. Malý Újezd is also located on the I/16 road between Mělník and Mladá Boleslav. You can therefore consider rail, bus, and road as separate travel options. Check the latest train and bus timetables before setting off.
You can combine the local and natural attractions mentioned above with the travel option that suits you best. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first decide whether the historic village square, the paths and protected areas, or the transport links should be the main focus of your trip.
