Libušín – Hillfort, Churches and Cultural History
Accommodation in Libušín
If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Libušín, archaeological history, churches and historical events can form the focus of your trip. The hillfort represents early settlement and castle archaeology; the churches differ in their architectural history and function. An educational trail, the Bitva Libušín festival, and nature and cycling themes complement these cultural points of interest.
Libušín Hillfort and Early History
A settlement existed on the promontory of Libušín in the 6th–7th centuries. Libušín Hillfort is classified as an important archaeological site. At 12.3 hectares, it is one of the largest promontory hillforts in Bohemia. The early medieval hillfort had an acropolis and two outer baileys. An engaging and educational trail has been established within the hillfort. The area figure conveys the size of the site; the acropolis and outer baileys describe its layout. The trail complements this archaeological focus with an explicitly educational approach.
Churches Between Pilgrimage and Architecture
The large Neo-Gothic St. Procopius Church in Libušín was built in 1908, primarily for local schoolchildren. It is single-naved and has a 32-metre-high tower. Eleven windows are made of cathedral glass, and five feature figurative designs. St. George’s Church on the hillfort serves a different function: since the new St. Procopius Church was consecrated in 1908, it has served as a pilgrimage and cemetery church. Thus, the architectural history and original purpose of one church stand alongside the pilgrimage and cemetery functions of the other.
The pilgrimage to St. George’s Church traditionally takes place on a Sunday around St. George’s Day on 24 April; the exact date varies from year to year. Before visiting, check whether the church will be open on your chosen date.
Bitva Libušín Festival
The historical Bitva Libušín festival was founded in 1991. During the festival, families can visit the historical camp. It showcases medieval ways of life and military camp life, as well as the fighters’ equipment and clothing. The programme also includes historical crafts and culture; historical craft products are displayed or offered for sale. The specific programme may vary from one edition of the festival to the next.
Nature, Cycling Route and Summer Swimming
Part of Libušín lies within Džbán Nature Park. In addition, there are three significant landscape features in the Libušín area. The protected Dřín na Hradišti Libušín memorial tree was first designated on 2 March 2023.
According to a municipal notice dated 4 June 2025, the Na Závini cycle route has been completed and is ready for use by cyclists. Check the current surface conditions on site before setting out. A 2025 regional tourism map lists the Jezírko natural swimming area for summer swimming. Check swimming conditions and access before your trip.
