Jílové u Prahy combines the history of gold mining with insights into mines, buildings and trails through the landscape. For planning your trip, the town offers a range of things to focus on: you can explore its gold-mining history, discover mining sites or seek out viewpoints and hiking trails. The following destinations offer concrete indications of whether Jílové u Prahy suits the interests guiding your choice of where to stay.

Gold-Mining History in the Museum and Underground

The exhibition “Step by Step Through the History of Gold” at the Regional Museum traces the history of gold from Celtic gold extraction by panning to deep mining in the Middle Ages. Its timeline therefore spans early extraction methods through to later work underground. The exhibition also includes a walk-through replica of a mining tunnel and augmented reality that animates mining machinery. Historical context, a spatial recreation and animated machinery thus provide different perspectives within the same exhibition.

Another underground experience is the first underground via ferrata in the Czech Republic, offered by the gold mines of Jílové. Its route passes through mining chambers dating from the reign of Charles IV. To finish, visitors descend through historic mine workings via ladders and stairs before the route returns to the Václav tunnel. Check whether the tour is available before visiting.

Several individual tunnels also have distinct features. In the area around Jílové u Prahy, Štola sv. Josefa is among the oldest mining sites in the Czech Republic open to the public. Its known tunnels and passages extend for 280 metres; the site is a National Cultural Monument. The visitor route through Štola sv. Antonína Paduánského runs across two levels, connected by seven ladders in an original, narrow shaft. Check tour availability in advance. The tunnel is in the Studené district near the Žampach Viaduct; a stone statue of Saint Anthony of Padua stands at its entrance portal.

The Štola Halíře tunnel is also nearby. This exploration tunnel dates from the mid-20th century and has a unique diamond-shaped profile. It is also accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, who can try gold panning there as well. Check access options and the visitor program in advance.

Protected Buildings and Local History

The historic centre of Jílové u Prahy was declared an Urban Conservation Area by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic in 1992. Among the buildings with their own architectural and historical features is Kostel sv. Vojtěcha, an Early Gothic church. The complex includes a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, a terrace wall and an access staircase.

Kostel Božího těla is a cemetery church on a hill west of Jílové u Prahy. Near the church is the gravestone of Ida Václavíčková, dating from 1847 and the oldest gravestone preserved on site. The Žampach Railway Bridge offers a different impression: it spans a deeply cut valley on seven semicircular stone arches. Together, these destinations show different aspects of the built heritage—from a church and its surroundings to a bridge with a striking arched structure.

Viewpoints and Outdoor Trails

Rozhledna Pepř is a public observation platform on a telecommunications tower on Pepř Hill, which rises to 449 metres, about one kilometre south of Jílové u Prahy. The platform is 18 metres above the ground and can be reached by climbing 91 steps. As access conditions may change, check access information before your visit.

Jílové u Prahy is the starting point for several hiking and cycling routes with viewpoints, including Rozhledna Pepř. For your plans, you can choose from routes for hiking and cycling, as well as a circular route rated “easy.”
