Dobšice: Celtic Heritage, Monuments and Nature
Accommodation in Dobšice
In Dobšice, you’ll encounter Celtic history, local monuments and nature along the Cidlina. The Museum of the Celts, archaeological finds and the Dobrodružná stezka malého Dobše trail offer different highlights for a stay focused on cultural history, activities or nature.
Celtic History in Dobšice
The Museum of the Celts features a permanent exhibition about the Celts who lived in the Dobšice area in the 4th to 3rd centuries BC. Another connection to Celtic history is the burial ground east of the municipality. It was discovered in 1899 and comprised 27 graves dating from the 4th to 3rd centuries BC.
The Museum of the Celts complex also includes a children’s playground designed in the style of a Celtic oppidum. Play features are combined with information about Celtic life. A life-size Celtic semi-subterranean dwelling measures 3 × 5 metres and can only be visited with a guide.
Monuments and Historical Periods
The Boží muka (Wayside Shrine) monument was erected in 1867. It consists of statues of Saints Peter and Paul and a cross with Christ, which serves as a symbol of the Roman Catholic Church. The monument to the fallen of the First and Second World Wars was ceremonially unveiled on 27 June 1948. The two monuments represent different themes: religious symbolism and public remembrance of the fallen.
Viewed chronologically, the historical references reach far back: the exhibition and burial ground relate to the 4th to 3rd centuries BC; Boží muka dates from 1867, and the war memorial was unveiled in 1948. This makes it possible to distinguish archaeological, religious and commemorative themes from markedly different eras.
Nature along the Cidlina
The Cidlina has several oxbow lakes in Dobšice, which are used for recreational fishing. At the same time, they provide habitats for numerous protected animals and plants. Dobšice is also a gateway to the protected Natura 2000 site of Žehuňský rybník. There is also a rest stop for cycle tourists in Dobšice. Its information boards cover the nearby natural attractions of Žehuňský rybník and Mount Oškobrh.
The natural features have different points of emphasis: the oxbow lakes combine recreational fishing with habitats for protected animals and plants, while Žehuňský rybník offers access to a protected Natura 2000 site.
Stops for Different Interests
The Dobrodružná stezka malého Dobše trail offers a different focus from the museum and monuments. It comprises twelve stops with information boards and activities for children and adults. Features include a rope swing over the water, log balancing elements and nature-themed puzzles. While the permanent exhibition focuses on the Celts, the trail combines its stops with activities and features that encourage movement.
