Svinaře: Castle History and Activities at Žába Pond
Accommodation in Svinaře
Svinaře combines a layered castle history with a St. Wenceslas Chapel, the tradition surrounding a spring, and sporting opportunities at Žába Pond. When planning your trip, you can focus on different aspects: historic buildings, seasonal activities, cycling and the surrounding countryside. You can also plan your journey by considering the bus and walking connections from Řevnice and Zadní Třebaň.
Castle, Fortress and Chapel
Svinaře Castle stands on the site of a fortress whose origins probably date to the first half of the 14th century. In 1766, Antonín Maschek of Maasburg had the castle built in the farmyard, together with extensive gardens and a park. The castle built in 1766 is therefore distinct from the older fortress: the site brings together two different historical building phases.
The Chapel of St. Wenceslas was built in 1901 to replace the Chapel of the Holy Cross, which had burned down at Svinaře Castle. It was consecrated on 28 September of the same year. Svinařské posvícení is also associated with 28 September; check the program for the year of your visit before traveling.
Despite the ongoing reconstruction, the castle complex offers interesting interiors and a beautiful castle park for outings and cultural experiences. Check accessibility before planning a specific visit. This allows you to include the castle’s history in your plans while also taking into account that the progress of the reconstruction may change.
Spring, Mineral Water and Žába Pond
A document from 1840 describes the healing properties of the Svinaře spring; a well and two basins are also mentioned at the site. Around 1900, a carriage came from Karlovy Vary twice a week to fill the mineral water into special bottles and transport it away. The difference in timing distinguishes the early written account of the spring from the later bottling and transport practices.
Žába Pond is a venue for numerous social and sporting events. Individual events may vary. In winter, people play hockey and go ice skating there; these activities depend on weather conditions. If you plan to attend an event or go ice skating in winter, check the program or weather conditions in advance.
Sports and Nature
Svinaře has a multipurpose artificial-turf sports field suitable for ball hockey, floorball, nohejbal, volleyball and tennis. Alongside the winter activities at the pond, this offers several other sports to choose from as possible areas of focus. If a particular sport is important to your plans, check the current terms of use in advance; facility rules may change.
Svinaře is considered a popular destination for holiday-home owners, cyclists and tourists setting out to explore the surrounding countryside. Cycling and trips into nature complement the castle’s history and sporting opportunities with a different focus. When planning, you can weigh up whether you are more interested in local history, physical activity or the landscape.
