Oštrelj: Tito’s Train, Forest Pass and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Oštrelj
Oštrelj lies on a pass between the Klekovača and Osječenica mountains. Deciduous and coniferous forests shape the landscape. The settlement is at an altitude of about 1,040 metres; the meeting of Mediterranean and continental climate conditions, together with its elevation, gives it the character of a climatic health resort. The M14.2 main road between Bosanski Petrovac and Drvar passes through Oštrelj. For your stay, you can include a cultural monument, hiking options and seasonal winter sports in your plans.
Tito’s Train and Cultural Heritage
Since 2013, Tito’s Train has been a national cultural monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The municipality carried out a project to preserve and enhance the monument and public area. This included lighting the area up to the train, cleaning the public area, and cleaning and painting the locomotive and carriages. The project also included a bench, a shelter, waste bins and a fence. Check the condition of the facilities before visiting.
The cultural and historical sights in the area around Bosanski Petrovac also include a Roman milestone in Oštrelj. It adds a link to Roman times to the picture of the area’s cultural heritage.
Hiking to the Oštrelj Summit
A route report from March 2021 gives an approximately 3.5-kilometre circular route to the summit, an easier route of about 2 kilometres, and a more challenging ascent of around 1.2 kilometres with an elevation gain of 357 metres. The comparison shows that the more challenging ascent is shorter than the easier route, but has the stated elevation gain. You can consider distance and elevation profile separately when planning your own hike.
A marked forest trail leads to the Oštrelj summit; at a fork, a significantly steeper, also marked alternative branches off. There are marked hiking trails elsewhere in Oštrelj, too. Tours and hikes can be arranged with experienced members of a mountaineering club. If you are planning a guided tour, check in advance whether one is currently available, and check the condition of the trails and markings before setting out.
Winter Sports and Other Activities
For the winter sports centre, the municipal strategy for 2021–2027 lists a 715-metre recreational ski slope, a 630-metre sports ski slope and a 15-metre-high ski jump. There is also a toboggan run, an anchor lift and a baby lift. The strategy also lists numerous cross-country ski trails in the immediate vicinity, opportunities for horse-drawn sleigh rides and hiking trails.
The same strategy describes the ski centre as not having been fully operational in the preceding years, notes a private concession and mentions a planned restoration. Therefore, check the seasonal status before a winter trip and ask which activities are being offered at the time.
Cycling Routes and Nature
There are cycling routes in the Oštrelj area. Rides with experienced cyclists are organised in cooperation with an extreme sports club; ask in advance whether they are currently available. The Lom primeval forest on Klekovača is 7 kilometres from Oštrelj and has trails for researchers and adventure travellers. Wildlife in the Oštrelj area includes mainly wolves, foxes, bears, capercaillies and hares. The destination therefore offers different themes to include in your plans: monuments and local history, marked trails, and cycling and winter sports, subject to conditions that should be checked in advance.
