Shirak combines a rich history of sacred architecture with museums, protected nature, and outdoor activities. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on monasteries and historic sites, the collections in Gyumri, or landscapes and birdwatching. Destinations are spread across the province, so decide which stops are important to your itinerary before looking for a hotel in Shirak.

Monasteries and Historic Buildings

The Basilica of Yereruyk is an early Christian monument dating from the 4th to 5th centuries. The basilica and its archaeological site were added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 1995. Harichavank, in the village of Harich, is a medieval monastery complex dating from the 7th to 13th centuries. It served as a royal summer residence, a distinguished school, and a scriptorium—different functions that bring the site’s long history to life.

Marmashen also offers several historical points of interest: the monastery stands on the banks of the Akhuryan, northwest of the village of Marmashen, and comprises two monumental groups known as the Large and Small Groups. According to inscriptions, the main church, Katoghike, was built between 988 and 1029. At Hoghevank, also known as the Red Monastery or Dzoragyugh Monastery, stands the Church of St. Karapet, dating from 1205. About 50 meters north of it, the lower rows of masonry from two other churches remain: a single-nave church from the 5th century and a tetraconch church from the 7th century.

You can find traces of other periods at Lmbatavank, southwest of Artik: the church dates from the 6th to 7th centuries and preserves remnants of interior frescoes. The Church of St. Hovhannes in the village of Zuygaghbyur dates from the 17th to 18th centuries and is listed in Armenia’s official register of immovable historical and cultural monuments. A cemetery dating from the 10th to 13th centuries is preserved around it. These sites offer different points of emphasis, from early church architecture to later monuments and cemetery complexes.

Museums, Art and Crafts

In Gyumri, the Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life focuses on the city’s architectural and social heritage. It is housed in a historic mansion belonging to the Dzitoghtsyan family, built in 1872 from red tuff stone typical of Shirak. The Aslamazyan Sisters Museum offers a different focus: its collection includes paintings, graphic works, and ceramics donated by artists Mariam and Yeranuhi Aslamazyan. The Gyumri History Museum holds more than 6,000 historical exhibits.

Literature and film are also represented in Gyumri. The Hovhannes Shiraz House-Museum displays the poet’s personal belongings, manuscripts, photographs, and gifts in six rooms. The Mher Mkrtchyan House-Museum features stage costumes, film props, awards, and objects from well-known films. In the village of Jajur, the Minas Avetisyan House-Museum is dedicated to the artist. On display are paintings, graphic works, and personal belongings, as well as the restored frescoes “Armenia” and “Bread Baking.”

Blacksmithing is part of the cultural identity of Shirak, especially Gyumri. Items preserved and made there include window grilles, fences, gates, doors, candlesticks, and chandeliers; the tradition has been inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List since 2023. In the village of Panik, a bread museum focuses on bread culture, traditional baking practices, and rural life. Its exhibition includes varieties of bread, grains, agricultural tools, and historical artifacts, among other things.

Nature, Trails and Activities

Lake Arpi National Park was established in 2009 to protect an area rich in biodiversity, wetlands, and habitats for rare bird species. More than 140 bird species have been recorded there; the park is also home to Armenia’s only breeding site for the Dalmatian pelican. Late spring and summer are particularly suitable for birdwatching. If nature observation is important to your trip, these seasons may be worth considering when you plan.

The Akhuryan Gorge offers opportunities for picnicking and observing rare birds, butterflies, and local plants. You can also explore the gorge by kayak; check with a local operator in advance to find out what is available. Stand-up paddleboarding is popular at the Azatan Reservoir, and several adventure tour operators organize these experiences. Here, too, it is a good idea to check with providers before your trip.

Those wishing to explore on foot will find numerous marked trails and paths in Shirak, crossing the region and used by the local population for centuries. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out. The rolling wheat fields are suitable for leisurely cycling as well as more challenging rides; local tour operators can organize cycling trips. In winter, activities such as snowkiting, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing are available in Shirak. Snow conditions and providers may vary.

Another point of reference is the Mantash Reservoir, at the foot of Mount Aragats. It lies at an elevation of 2,600 meters, contains more than 8 million cubic meters of drinking water, and is a popular stop for hikers heading to or from Aragats. When planning your trip, you can compare different options: trails and altitude, birdwatching in the national park, or activities on the water.

Getting There and Choosing a Hotel

Gyumri Shirak International Airport serves domestic and international flights and is the main gateway by air to the Shirak region. Check current flight schedules before your trip. The museums in Gyumri, historic sites in various villages, and nature destinations offer different thematic focuses.
