Gyumri is considered a walkable city, with art, crafts, traditions and humor shaping it as a travel destination. If you are looking for a hotel in Gyumri, these themes can help you explore the city according to your interests. Museums, historic architecture, creative studios and local food culture each offer a different perspective.

Explore Gyumri on Foot

Most attractions are 10 to 20 minutes’ walk from one another—a useful guide if you want to spread several visits throughout the day. For panoramic views of Gyumri and Mount Aragats, the Ferris wheel in the central park offers a different perspective on the city in clear weather.

Museums and the City’s History

The Aslamazyan Sisters Museum houses paintings, graphic works and ceramics donated by Mariam and Yeranuhi Aslamazyan. It is located in a historic 19th-century building. The Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life focuses on a different subject: it preserves Gyumri’s architectural and social heritage in the context of Alexandropol. The museum is housed in the historic Dzitoghtsyan family mansion, built from red tuff in 1872.

The Gyumri History Museum holds more than 6,000 historical exhibits. The heritage it presents includes jewelry and silverwork, as well as theater, photography and music. Its collections range from visual art and ceramics to architectural and urban history and various forms of cultural expression.

Architecture and Blacksmithing

The Black Fortress was built between 1834 and 1847 as a Russian imperial defensive structure. Thanks to its acoustics, it is used as a cultural venue and concert space; its program may vary. Another chapter in the city’s architectural history can be seen in the current railway station building: constructed in the 1970s, it is considered an example of Soviet-Armenian modernist architecture.

The blacksmithing tradition is also visible in the cityscape. Ironwork can be found in the interior and exterior decoration of private and public buildings in Gyumri. This makes it possible to appreciate the craft not only as a subject in the city’s history but also in the details of its buildings.

Creative Studios

Leo Art Studio combines a ceramics workshop with an exhibition space. Visitors can buy handmade pieces there and watch the creative process. At Varem-Marem Art Studio, visitors can make their own objects using brushes, paints or clay. The two offerings therefore differ in their focus on watching or taking part in a creative activity. As studio operations may change, check what is currently available before your visit.

Food Culture and a Brewery Tour

The season also matters for a traditional dish: the khash season in Gyumri begins in late autumn, with the first cold days, and lasts until the weather gets warmer. Another dish prepared in Gyumri or the surrounding areas uses the whole head of a sheep or cow.

Gyumri Beer Factory offers tours that explain the beer-making process and include tastings of Gyumri light beer or Alexandrapol lager. This adds a local brewing tradition to the picture of Gyumri, alongside the museums, architecture and studios that each shape a visit in their own way.
