Aragatsotn: Mount Aragats, Culture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Aragatsotn
Aragatsotn Between Mountains and Culture
Mount Aragats is the highest mountain in Armenia. Aragatsotn’s elevation ranges from 950 to 4,090 meters above sea level. On the southern side of Aragats lies Lake Kari, at an elevation of 3,200 meters. These three figures provide an initial guide for a trip that takes in high mountains, waterscapes and historical sites.
The destination name Aparan is also relevant to Aragatsotn: on December 25, 2025, the Armenian government designated the settlements of Aparan, Tsaghkahovit, Yeghipatrush, Aragats, Hartavan and Geghadzor, as well as Mount Aragats, as the “Aparan” destination in Aragatsotn Marz. The decision took effect on January 4, 2026.
Hiking on Mount Aragats
The most accessible route up Aragats is on its southern slope and starts at Lake Kari. Another hike runs from the village of Aragats through the Gegharot River Gorge to the mountain’s crater. This route is listed as 14 kilometers long. The two described options can therefore be distinguished by their starting points and the stated route.
Another striking landscape is the Kasakh River Gorge, which is approximately 70 kilometers long and up to 200 meters deep. A hiking trail through the gorge runs from Hovhannavank to Saghmosavank, or in the opposite direction. The gorge’s dimensions give an impression of the landscape, while the named trail provides a specific link between the two monasteries.
Gorges, Water and Trails
Gegharot Waterfall lies on the slopes of Mount Aragats in Aragatsotn Province. It can be reached either by driving on unpaved roads along the mountain slopes or by taking an approximately 10-kilometer hike from the village of Aragats. Access conditions may vary depending on the season and road conditions. Check them before planning your route.
Aparan Reservoir is suitable for camping, picnics and hiking; it also supplies water to the Ararat Valley today. The marked Oh Dam! hiking trail leads to especially scenic spots near the reservoir. Supman.Armenia also offers stand-up paddleboarding at Aparan Reservoir. Check the latest details of the offer before making plans. The Aparan Reservoir Loop is described as an easy, 10-kilometer route; its walking time is given as approximately three to three and a half hours. Since trail conditions can change, it is a good idea to check the latest conditions before setting out.
Fortresses, Learning and Archaeology
Amberd is currently the largest surviving fortress in Armenia and lies on the southern slopes of Aragats. Saghmosavank offers a different historical focus: the monastery was an important center of learning and calligraphy and had a medieval higher school. The archaeological site of Agarak has been officially designated a historical and cultural reserve by the government of Armenia. Together, these places showcase different aspects of Aragatsotn’s cultural heritage.
Visits Related to Astronomy
The W. Ambartsumian House-Museum offers a 40-minute visit. The 2.6-meter telescope can be viewed during the day as part of a one-hour visit. During nighttime observations with a professional small telescope, you can observe the night sky and constellations for an hour; visiting hours are seasonal. The listed types of visits therefore differ both in what they involve and when they take place.
Wine and Regional Specialties
Dozens of modern wineries in Aragatsotn welcome guests for tours and wine tastings. In Ashtarak, visitors can also take master classes in baking gata and lavash, and making sujuch and arishta. These products are traditional in Ashtarak and the Aragatsotn region. The master classes may not always be available, so ask about them before making plans.
Planning Your Hotel Stay
