In Canillo, reasons to visit range from the plants and animals of Coma de Ransol to striking buildings and collections. You can tailor your stay to your interests, whether they lie in nature, outdoor activities or culture.

Nature in Coma de Ransol

Scots pines and junipers grow in Coma de Ransol. The ground layer includes heather, abarset and blueberries; bàlec grows in sunny spots. Alpine flowers include gentians, Pyrenean lilies, yarrow and yellow bedstraw. Wildlife is also part of this landscape: Coma de Ransol is home to wild boar, roe deer, chamois, stone martens, hares and marmots, among other species. The variety of plant habitats and animal species offers nature lovers several things to focus on; however, there is no guarantee of seeing individual wild animals.

Trails and activities

Two ecotourism routes in the parish of Canillo are led by qualified professionals. They run through the Incles Valley and the Ransol Valley, also known as Coma de Ransol. The Camí de l’Obaga is also in the Incles Valley; it is 2.6 km long one way. This one-way distance should not be confused with the length of a round trip. When choosing an outing, it is therefore useful to consider whether you want to base your choice on a specific trail length or on the guided routes through the valleys mentioned above.

The Pont Tibetà de Canillo in the Vall del Riu offers a different perspective: it stands at an altitude of more than 1,875 metres, is one metre wide and extends up to 158 metres above the ground. Its elevation and dimensions describe the structure more precisely than a simple distance figure, while also giving an impression of what sets it apart from a hiking trail.

The Family Park in the Canillo sector offers summer mini-golf for children aged three and up, as well as a free outdoor play area for children aged four to eleven. If you are planning a trip with children, the different age ranges can help you choose an activity. As the offering is seasonal, check before your visit whether it is currently open in summer.

Buildings, collections and Meritxell

The Romanesque bell tower of Sant Serni de Canillo was altered in the 17th century. It is 27 metres high and towers over Canillo’s old town. Its Romanesque origins and later alterations reflect different phases of construction; its height is another distinctive feature.

Canillo’s Motorcycle Museum displays a total of 150 motorcycle models from well-known brands across 700 m². The exhibition illustrates the development of the motorcycle from 1896 to 2013. The Espai Galobardes offers a different cultural perspective: this 300 m² gallery is located in Canillo’s cable car building. It is intended to house and display 524 works by Francesc Galobardes, as well as host exhibitions by other artists and showcase cultural forms of expression from Andorra and abroad.

The former sanctuary of Meritxell now houses a permanent exhibition on the history and veneration of Meritxell, Andorra’s patron saint. The sanctuary organises guided tours. The exhibition and tours offer two different ways to engage with the site: a permanent exploration of its history and veneration, and a guided visit.

Andorra in a wider context

In the wider destination of Andorra, the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the cultural landscape category in 2004. The Coronallacs Trail is another hiking option in Andorra: this approximately 90 km circular route links the country’s four mountain huts. Compared with the 2.6 km Camí de l’Obaga, measured one way, it differs in both scale and route format. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike.
