Nyby is the smaller and newer part of Bogø’s main village. It was originally built as a kind of Nyboder for Bogø’s seafaring population. This history gives the village a maritime character, which is also reflected in the island’s architectural heritage. On Bogø, walking trails and coastal themes add to the historical experience.

Maritime History and Village Character

Bogø By and Nyby are home to captains’ villas and smaller seamen’s houses. Some buildings have ship names on their façades, telling the story of Bogø’s maritime history. The variety ranges from captains’ villas to smaller houses belonging to seamen; the ship names add another maritime touch to the façades.

Near Nyby, Bogø Hovedgade and the surrounding town are designated as a conservation-worthy cultural environment. Most of the designated area lies within the town zone. The designation therefore covers the street and the surrounding urban area, not just a single building.

Bogø Church has three 19th-century ship models that bear witness to Bogø’s history as a seafaring island. Also nearby is the Dutch-style windmill Bogø Mølle, built in 1852. The church, windmill and houses in the village show different aspects of the cultural heritage: ship models, a historic building and the maritime character of the residential area.

Ferry Crossing and Walking Trail

In summer, you can travel from Nyby ferry terminal on Bogø’s south coast to Stubbekøbing on Falster. If you plan to use this connection for your trip, check the timetable for your chosen day in advance. Summer is the stated period for departures from Nyby.

The Camønoen, a 175-kilometre walking trail across Møn, Nyord and Bogø, runs nearby. Its length and route across three islands make it a different way to explore than a single visit to the village: Bogø is part of a longer island trail. When planning your trip, you can weigh a focus on Nyby’s local history against a walk on Bogø.

Coast and Activities on Bogø

Near Nyby, Bogø has a varied coastline with small cliffs and sandy beaches. At Bogø Lighthouse, there are good opportunities to launch kayaks and canoes. The coast is also easily accessible there for anglers and divers. The activities mentioned therefore have distinct focuses: the Camønoen is a walking trail, while at the lighthouse the focus is on launching boats and accessing the coast.

The Camønoen passes through Bogø Harbour, which is also crossed by several national and international cycling routes. There is also a shelter site with a fire pit. The historic fishing vessel K1054 Karen af Bogø is based at Bogø Harbour. A ladder enables people of all ages to sail on the K1054.
