Bogø By: Mill, Harbor and Maritime Townscape
Accommodation in Bogø By
Bogø By is shaped by its maritime connections, which are clearly visible in the townscape. Along Bogø Hovedgade, grand captains’ villas stand beside smaller seafarers’ houses; some façades bear ship names. The venerable Navigation School is also located on Hovedgade, and the street follows the direction of the ridge. The maritime townscape can therefore be seen in several details: the houses, the school, and the street’s course.
Mill, Harbor and Ferry History
Bogø Mølle stands in Bogø By and was built in 1852, after the earlier mill from 1696 burned down. From the mill, the view stretches across Grønsund to Falster. Bogø Havn is also on Grønsund and offers a beautiful view of the Farø Bridges. The two viewpoints offer different perspectives: the mill provides a wide view as far as Falster, while the harbor view centers on the Farø Bridges.
The wooden ferry Ida, one of Denmark’s oldest wooden ferries, is part of the history of the connection between Bogø and Stubbekøbing. It was completed in 1959 and ready to operate between the two towns. The historic crossing is recorded as taking twelve minutes. If you are planning a crossing today, check current ferry information.
Walking and Activities by the Water
The Sporet på Bogø walking trail starts at Bogø Harbor and is about 7.4 kilometers long. It is open to pedestrians, but not cyclists; seasonal or temporary closures may occur. Check that the trail is currently open before setting out. Another regional walking route runs through Møn, Bogø, and Nyord and is 175 kilometers long. The comparison shows two different scales: a trail of about 7.4 kilometers starting at the harbor and a much longer route through the region.
Bogø Fyr offers good opportunities to launch kayaks and canoes. The coast is also easily accessible there, including for anglers and divers. In the wider area, visitors can kayak at Skåningebro and paddle around Bogø and Farø. The recommendations have different emphases: Bogø Fyr is noted for coastal access and launching, while Skåningebro is a starting point for a paddling trip around Bogø and Farø.
Baking and Dining at BogøBrød
If you are interested in regional ingredients, BogøBrød is a great place to start: the sourdough bakery makes everything from scratch using organic and locally sourced ingredients. Breakfast and lunch are served, and selected delicacies are sold there. The evening café serves Italian pizza from a wood-fired stone oven. BogøBrød’s baking approach is complemented by offerings for different meals.
