Discover Jyllinge on Roskilde Fjord
Accommodation in Jyllinge
Jyllinge offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay: the approximately 22 km Jyllinge-Sløøjfen, the historic fishing village, church architecture and seasonal white-tailed eagle watching. There is also a beach on Roskilde Fjord and Fjordglimt Café og Kulturhus, a local meeting place.
Cycle through the landscape
The Jyllinge-Sløøjfen is approximately 22 km long and features varied terrain. Starting at Jyllinge Harbour, it follows Fjordstien, cycle route 40; along the way, it offers views of the fjord and Eskilsø. The route also passes through historic landscapes, peaceful nature and areas rich in birdlife. Two details are useful for planning in different ways: the approximate 22 km gives you an idea of the overall distance, while the varied terrain describes the character of the route. Together with the views and landscapes, these give you several specific pointers for your cycling trip.
White-tailed eagles and the harbour
The winter half of the year is an important time to look for white-tailed eagles: on Roskilde Fjord, including around Eskilsø and Jyllinge Holme, there is a good chance of seeing them from Jyllinge Marina. Jyllinge Marina has 415 berths. The harbour therefore combines a specific figure about its size with a seasonal reason to turn your attention to the fjord’s natural environment.
Jyllinge’s fishing history
Jyllinge Fiskerleje is characterised by small old fishermen’s houses and distinctive red-painted gear sheds. The sheds were built around 1920 to store the fishermen’s equipment. The old slipway and the export house used for storing the catch are still in use. At the fishing village, you will therefore find both buildings that served a former purpose and harbour features that are still in use.
Churches and architecture
Jyllinge’s historic church was built between 1080 and 1130. The chancel, nave and apse are Romanesque; the Gothic tower dates from around 1400. This sets the Romanesque elements alongside a tower from a later Gothic period. Chancel, nave and apse refer to different parts of the church building; the style labels also distinguish its architectural forms.
Hellig Kors Kirke offers a different perspective: its architecture was conceived and designed as an abstraction of the open, horizontal landscape around Jyllinge. While the historic church can be understood through its architectural elements and construction date, the design of Hellig Kors Kirke draws on an idea of the landscape. The comparison shows two different ways of looking at architecture: through its forms and period, or through the landscape that shapes its concept.
Culture and beach
Fjordglimt Café og Kulturhus is a local meeting place in Jyllinge for community, socialising and cultural experiences. If you are interested in a specific event there, check the current programme directly with the venue.
A beach in Jyllinge lies on Roskilde Fjord below a green space. It can be reached via Kildestræde; from the north, a path also leads to the beach from Parkstræde. These two access points give you practical guidance when planning a beach visit during your stay.
