Roskilde Municipality: Viking Ships, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Roskilde Municipality
Viking ships, royal history, music and protected landscapes give a trip to Roskilde Municipality a range of different highlights. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether you want to focus on museums and historic buildings, a festival visit, or trails along the fjord and through natural areas.
Viking Ships, Music and Local History
The Viking Ship Hall at the Viking Ship Museum is home to a permanent exhibition of the five Skuldelev ships. The exhibition tells the story of the ships as well as of Nordic maritime adventure during the Viking Age. The museum island has a boatyard where visitors can watch boatbuilders at work. From May 1 to September 30, the museum offers daily sailing trips in a traditional Nordic wooden boat. Check the current sailing calendar before your trip.
Rockmuseet takes visitors through the history of Danish rock and pop music from the 1950s to the present day. Interactive exhibitions and music-related installations introduce visitors to sounds, images, objects and other musical content; exhibitions may change. Musicon is described as a post-industrial stage for urban culture, community and entrepreneurship. Roskilde Museum offers a different perspective on the past, presenting the cultural history of Roskilde and the surrounding region through archaeological finds and more recent objects.
Sankt Laurentius also brings together different layers of history. The site comprises a church tower and an underground church ruin, located two metres below Stændertorvet in central Roskilde. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit. Roskilde's Gothic medieval cathedral is both a royal mausoleum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. More than 40 Danish kings and queens are buried in its richly decorated royal chapels. Tours of the chapels are offered by the cathedral and are subject to the current schedule.
Routes for Different Distances
The signposted “Sti til Naturen” circular route starts at Roskilde Cathedral and is 12.5 kilometres long. Shorter circular routes pass through natural areas: at Gundsømagle Sø, an approximately 3.5-kilometre loop runs from the car park at Østrup to the reed labyrinth and back. The full loop at Bolund measures approximately 3.2 kilometres; the path to the peninsula runs for about 500 metres across the beach meadow. Route conditions there can change depending on the water level. The different route lengths make it easier to gauge how far you plan to travel on your outing.
For cycling, the municipality has five signposted, family-friendly circular routes ranging from 10 to 20 kilometres; municipal information was updated in 2025. Check local conditions before setting out. The Fjordstien is a cycling and walking route approximately 275 kilometres long in total, circling Roskilde Fjord and Isefjord; individual sections may have separate walking trails. The Hedebostien links Roskilde Fjord with Køge Bay and also passes close to natural areas and cultural-historical attractions. For this trail, check the current route app or guide.
Fjord Landscapes and Natural Areas
Roskilde Fjord is designated as an international Natura 2000 protected area. The medieval town of Roskilde is an important part of Skjoldungernes Land National Park; the protected Bolund peninsula, north of Risø in Roskilde Fjord, is also part of the national park. The landscape here can therefore be explored through both its natural areas and its cultural-historical connections.
Gundsømagle Sø is a bird sanctuary. A 800-metre-long footpath runs along the south shore, and a pier approximately 300 metres long crosses the reeds. Paths also lead to bird towers, where visitors can experience the protected wildlife and plant life. Access to the path and pier may change, for example during maintenance or nature conservation work. The municipality has at least nine bathing spots; local bathing conditions may vary.
Festival Dates and Trip Planning
Roskilde Festival takes place annually in Roskilde and lasts eight days. In addition to concerts, the programme includes art, talks, films, workshops, communal meals and activities at the festival site and in the camping areas. Dates and individual offerings vary by edition. If a festival visit is the reason for your trip, include the specific event dates in your plans.
The train journey from Copenhagen to Roskilde takes about 25 minutes; check the current timetable. In Roskilde itself, the manageable distances can be explored on foot or by rental bike; providers and availability may change. For individual outings, it is also worth checking the relevant tour dates and trail conditions.
