Assendrup: Ribbon Village and Coastal Landscape
Accommodation in Assendrup
Assendrup is a ribbon village shaped by a winding road. Today, the main road, Juelsmindevej, runs through the village. Large farmsteads and a landscape characterized by farmland, scattered farms and hedgerows add to the picture. Around Ulbæk Strand, you will also find a marked footpath, wooded slopes and stretches of coast with varied character.
Village Character and Farm Landscape
The typical village house in Assendrup is a red-brick house with a prominent plinth and a pitched roof with a half-hipped end. Large farmsteads still characterize the village today. SnogagergĂĄrd forms its distinctive southern edge and gives the village view a clear connection to the surrounding landscape at this point.
The wider landscape also combines agriculture and nature. Engum and Assendrup are within easy reach of Vejle Fjord; productive farmland, scattered farms and hedgerows characterize the area. For trip planning, Assendrup offers more than a single excursion destination: the ribbon village and its rural surroundings each have their own distinctive character.
Footpath near Ulbækhus
A marked, 2 km footpath leads from the car park near Ulbækhus, below the beach, to the Assendrup boat landing. The path runs through the forest above Ulbækhus and over a causeway across Ulbæk. It passes the public beach area at the stream’s mouth into the fjord and then returns to the car park. The route therefore includes forest, a stream crossing and a stretch of coast.
The stated length gives you a specific point of reference when planning. Route details may change, so check the latest information on the route before setting out.
Ulbæk Strand and Nature by the Fjord
Near Ulbæk Strand, there is a floating jetty where small sailing dinghies, rowboats, canoes and kayaks can moor. The nearby beach area also has a water point, two fire pits, tables, benches and an accessible toilet. The facilities are open to everyone. However, the beach area is not suitable for swimming—an important distinction when planning a stay by the water.
Beech forests rise along the slopes near Ulbæk Strand; in places, they reach the shoreline and offer views across the fjord. The wooded slopes provide habitats for many rare and protected animals and plants; their presence may vary by season. The wooded slopes on the north side of Vejle Fjord are designated as a Natura 2000 site. These features give the landscape its own focus: wooded slopes and fjord views rather than a beach visit geared towards swimming.
Coast and Creative Activities
Along the coast by Assendrup Skov and farther west to Tirsbæk Strand, the shore is mostly narrow and stony. There are a few short stretches of sandy beach in between. Together with the footpath near Ulbækhus, this provides a clear point of reference when choosing between a walk through the forest and coastal landscape and a stay at the beach: the beach area is not suitable for swimming, and the coast is mostly stony.
A different attraction is the creative workshops run by Danmark & Norden at Assendrup Nørremark 67. They cover a range of subject areas and are led by different instructors. Workshop dates may change, so check which activities are currently available before making plans.
