Rømø Kirkeby: Plantation, heath and hiking trails
Accommodation in Rømø Kirkeby
If you want to combine hiking trails, nature and history during your stay, Rømø Kirkeby offers several specific starting points. The Rømø Stinet can be tailored to your preferred distance and the places in the south of Rømø. Kirkeby Plantage and the view from Spidsbjerg add different landscapes to your hiking plans. Historical themes are also part of the picture at Sct. Clemens Kirke, its tombstones and the old rescue station. This gives you a basis for deciding which priorities should guide your choice of destination.
Nature and landscape
From the summit of Spidsbjerg, you can enjoy a good view over Spidsbjerg Hede. In Kirkeby Plantage, you will find open areas, moors, salt marshes and the small forest lake Hviddal sø. The two perspectives differ: at Spidsbjerg, the view across the heath takes centre stage, while the plantation encompasses several landscape features. Parts of Kirkeby Plantage west of Sanddalvej and Steensvej are within Natura 2000 site No. 89, the Wadden Sea. The designation applies to parts of the area. If you want to take its exact boundaries into account, check them against a current official map.
Hiking on the Rømø Stinet
The Rømø Stinet takes hikers from Havneby in the south to Spidsbjerg by Kirkeby Plantage. You can choose the route length and the places you want to visit in the south of Rømø. This lets you decide on two aspects of your hiking plans: the extent of the route and which southern destinations to include.
Parking for the Rømø Stinet is available at Rømø Kirke, Havnebyvej 152, 6792 Rømø. As parking arrangements can change, check the situation before you set off.
Church, tombstones and local history
The old rescue station, Den gamle Redningsstation, is located at Havnebyvej 156 in Tønder Municipality and is listed as a historic monument. The Kommandørstenene by Sct. Clemens Kirke form a unique collection of tombstones from the 16th, 17th and 19th centuries. You can arrange guided tours of Sct. Clemens Kirke and its cemetery. The historical themes differ: one focuses on the listed rescue station, the other on the church, cemetery and tombstone collection.
