Kongsmark on Rømø: History and Nature
Accommodation in Kongsmark
Kongsmark on Rømø can be understood through its unusual transport history and the natural setting of its holiday-home area. For getting around today, bus route 285 is relevant: it connects Skærbæk on the mainland with Havneby on Rømø, and most buses stop in Kongsmark. The historic railway and today’s bus connection offer two different perspectives on the place. If you are looking for a hotel in Kongsmark, these pointers can help you choose a location that suits your interests and planned journeys.
The history of the Rømøbanen
The Rømøbanen was a 3.81 km tourist railway between the ferry pier in Kongsmark and the bathing hotel in Lakolk. Horses pulled the train because the sand beneath the tracks could not support the weight of a locomotive. The former Kongsmark Færgebro station was located at the ferry landing. From there, the railway crossed Rømø to the large dune areas on the west coast. The route, the motive power and the starting point each tell a different part of the same story: the ferry landing was the starting point, the sand determined the technical solution, and the railway connected Kongsmark with a tourist destination on the island.
Kongsmark’s former role
Kongsmark’s former importance was also connected with a ferry service. Until 1948, Kongsmark was Rømø’s main town because of the ferry connection to Ballum. This puts the ferry history in a different light from the Rømøbanen: the railway led to tourist destinations on the island, while the connection to Ballum explains Kongsmark’s former status as the main town. The two historical routes thus answer different questions—where the railway went and why Kongsmark was once the main town.
Nature and walking trails
The Kongsmark holiday-home area lies in the eastern part of Rømø, about 4 km south of the causeway. It is set in a natural area with pine trees criss-crossed by several walking trails. This landscape adds another dimension to the transport history when choosing a location: pine trees and trails are defining features of the holiday-home area. If you enjoy walking, you can take this setting into account when making your decision.
The Natura 2000 site No. 89 Vadehavet borders Kongsmark. It includes the H78 habitat area and the F57 bird protection area. This gives you two different connections with nature: the protected area bordering Kongsmark and the holiday-home area’s landscape of pine trees and trails.
A listed building
The local history also includes Kongsmark gamle Skole, a listed building with a registered preservation declaration. The school offers a different focus from the Rømøbanen: here, the focus is on a single building with protected status, while the railway represents a former transport link across the island. Together, they offer two different ways to explore Kongsmark’s history: architectural and transport-related.
Bus and bicycle rental
For practical orientation, the bus connection and bicycle rental are two separate points to consider. Bus route 285 runs between Skærbæk on the mainland and Havneby on Rømø; most buses stop in Kongsmark. As routes and service frequency may change, check the current timetable before travelling. Bicycles can be rented from Rømø Cykler in Kongsmark. Check the current availability and the provider’s information in advance. For the bus, the route and stopping pattern are relevant; for bicycle rental, it is the specific rental option.
