Bolilmark
Accommodation in Bolilmark
Nature and landscape
Bolilmark is clearly situated in the heathland and within coastal section J1.06. This section lies entirely within Natura 2000 area 89 Vadehavet. Bolilmark includes protected nature under Section 3 of the Danish Nature Protection Act and borders other protected natural areas. Bolilmark is one of the seven holiday-home areas on Rømø; these holiday-home areas lie within the Wadden Sea National Park.
Around Bolilmark, Kirkeby Plantage includes open areas with bogs and salt marshes. The small woodland lake Hviddal sø is also located there. This means that heathland, open wetlands and a woodland lake come together near the village as distinct landscape features.
Hiking trails and views
A marked, three-kilometre hiking trail runs through the heath and Tvismark Plantage via Høstbjerg. Nearby Høstbjerg is a 19-metre-high hill with a viewpoint overlooking Rømø. From there, the view is unobstructed in every direction, and light pollution is very low.
In Kirkeby Plantage, a yellow-marked hiking trail forms a four-kilometre loop to Spidsbjerg. The two trails offer different routes: one over Høstbjerg and one specifically designed as a loop to Spidsbjerg. Hiking and cycling trails also run through an area of heathland around Bolilmark. The circular trail is one kilometre longer.
Bunkers and culture nearby
Around 15 of the 50 bunkers remaining on Rømø from the German occupation of 1940–1945 are located in Tvismark Plantage. There are two bunkers on Høstbjerg, which are part of the former German radar station, Rose-Stellung. Both places are therefore associated with the hiking trails as well as the island’s history.
On a guided bunker tour, the route takes you through several bunkers and back out through an emergency exit. Reservations for the tour are arranged through Naturcenter Tønnisgård. Ask them about an available date before making plans.
Naturcenter Tønnisgård has an exhibition about the natural environment between the Wadden Sea and the North Sea. Topics include the formation of Rømø and amber, as well as the hidden wildlife of the salt marshes. Nationalmuseets Kommandørgård is also nearby: a fully furnished old Rømø family farmstead with a dwelling house and farm buildings. The two destinations focus on different themes: nature and the island’s formation on the one hand, and the interior of a historic family farmstead on the other.
Routes to Lakolk
A hiking and cycling trail leads from Bolilmark to Lakolk. A cycle path leads to Lakolk’s shopping area and the beach. When you arrive, check the signposting and the condition of the cycling route locally.
