Trails around Ølgod

The Historiestien is about 6 km long and runs around Ølgod Byskov. Its 13 stops provide information about the forest’s origins, flora and fauna, burial mounds, and the people who created the area. Local stories and activities add to these themes. On the edge of town, Ølgod Byskov offers access to 75 ha of forest. The Historiestien thus combines a manageable route length with several points of interest.

If you would like to include a longer route around town in your plans, the Stien rundt om Ølgod is a 9-kilometre route. It is in good condition: most of it is paved, and the rest is surfaced with gravel and stone dust. The trails differ in both length and stated focus: the Historiestien highlights its stops and forest themes, while the Stien rundt om Ølgod is designed as a circular route around Ølgod.

Forest, remembrance and nature

Hanssinelund offers a distinct focus. This woodland of about 2 ha was created between 1909 and 1955 by Ølgod bookseller Hans Nielsen and his wife Sine. A network of paths leads to twelve different memorial stones dedicated to well-known poets. Hanssinelund was donated to the municipality of Ølgod in 1955. Its origins and memorial stones give a visit a cultural and historical dimension.

The lakes’ names also reflect connections with nature. Guldsmedesøen was named in 2018 after a rare green hawker dragonfly was found there; the lake was named after this dragonfly species. Breeding mute swans gave Svanesøen its name. The two naming stories therefore differ: Guldsmedesøen’s story centres on the dragonfly that was found and the year it was named, while Svanesøen’s centres on the breeding swans.

Experience art and history

There are 24 permanent sculptures throughout Ølgod. The town’s art thus offers a different focus from the thematically grouped stops along the Historiestien. Dit Museum Ølgod explores the history of Danish agriculture and the development from poor heathland farmer to democratic farmer. You can also experience the streets, people and shops of the railway town there. The exhibition is currently packed away for renovation work. Check access before visiting.

At Hjedding Andelsmejeri, the building is furnished as it was when it was established in 1882. The old dairy building contains, among other things, a steam engine, a centrifuge, a butter churn and a kneading table. This equipment gives a concrete impression of the kinds of machines on display at the old dairy.
