Tinglev combines wetlands with a rich local history. When planning a stay, you can choose from a range of ways to explore the natural environment, historic buildings and local cultural sites. Tinglev Mose showcases the landscape and wildlife; the church, Olgerdiget and sculpture park reveal other sides of the town. Walking trails and activities at the swimming pool are also among the options for your stay.

Landscape and walking trails

Tinglev Mose was originally the shallow lake Tinglev Sø, southeast of Tinglev. A restoration project was carried out there from 1999 to 2004. The water level was raised by about half a metre to create habitats for many rare plant and animal species. Tinglev Mose is a wetland rich in wildlife. Its former lake, subsequent restoration and wildlife together make up a distinctive natural area.

There are five walking trails of varying lengths in and around Tinglev. All five start at the bicycle shelter at Tinglev Midt, north of the library. The route descriptions at the starting point include QR codes with additional information. A marked 5 km trail runs through Tinglev Mose around the wetland; about 600 metres of it follows boardwalks through the marsh. A small observation tower in the southern part of the wetland offers views of the wildlife. There is no parking in the immediate vicinity of the Tinglev Mose route. Take this into account when planning your journey.

Cultural history and art

Tinglev Church was built around 1100 and has a winged altarpiece from the 16th century. The town’s cultural life includes both Danish and German associations. A German-minded and a Danish-minded clergyman also share the same church in Tinglev. The site thus brings together architectural history and Danish-German church life.

Olgerdiget is a defensive structure more than 12 km long, between Tinglev and Aabenraa. An information pavilion about Olgerdiget stands where the structure crosses Olmersvej. Tinglev cemetery contains a memorial stone and 16 graves of prisoners of war from the prisoner-of-war camp at GĂĄrdeby Mark, a few kilometres south of Tinglev.

Frederik Grube’s sculpture park is behind the old smithy at Hovedgaden 105. Numerous human and animal figures there have been carved with a chainsaw. The park adds local sculpture to Tinglev’s architectural and historical attractions. One of Tinglev’s attractions is also Denmark’s last railway kiosk.

Events and exercise

Byskoven is home to a covered outdoor stage and a clubhouse, set among deciduous woodland. Concerts are held on the stage every year, including on Constitution Day. This venue adds a regular programme of concerts to the town’s historical and artistic attractions.

Water-based exercise is also available locally. AquaCross, a full-body workout, is offered at Tinglev Swimming Pool. It is a circuit-training session with a variety of activities on land and in the water. Water aerobics is also held in the large pool. If you plan to take part in either activity, check the current class times and availability in advance: the programme and timetable may change.
