Hiking and Cycling Routes in the Municipality
Almost 50 kilometres of the historic Hærvejen hiking and cycling trail run through Aabenraa Municipality. There are also numerous marked hiking trails, running along gravel and field tracks, forest paths, sections by the fjord and country roads. The landscape offers a range of backdrops, from hilly areas and deep valleys to extensive forests and bathing beaches.
There are also various types of cycling routes to choose from, including hilly trails, quiet country roads and coastal stretches. Free-to-use Bike Stations along the routes offer facilities for minor bicycle repairs. Kongehøjsporet is an approximately 12-kilometre mountain bike trail through hilly terrain in the forests around Aabenraa.
The figures for Hærvejen and Kongehøjsporet refer to different things: almost 50 kilometres of the historic hiking and cycling trail lie within the municipality, while approximately 12 kilometres is the length of the mountain bike trail. This lets you distinguish between the two figures by type and length, without treating them as equivalent routes.
Forests, Islands and Water
In Frøslev Plantage, oak scrub, deciduous trees, small lakes and inland dunes lie among the spruce trees. A hiking route leads through this geologically distinctive landscape and its inland dunes. If you prefer to experience nature from the water, you can head to the rivers where it is expressly permitted: canoeing is allowed on Grønå and Sønderå, the only rivers in the municipality where this activity is permitted.
On Store Okseø, visitors can follow the path and beach around the island. There are four shelters and a composting toilet on the island. Check the shelters’ availability before your trip. Aabenraa’s landscape also ranges from hilly terrain and deep valleys to extensive forests and high-quality bathing beaches.
Cultural History in Aabenraa and the Surrounding Area
Genforeningsparken commemorates the Reunification of 1920 and explores its hundred-year history. A timeline traces the history of the Danish movement in Southern Jutland, from the First Schleswig War to the 100th anniversary of the Reunification. The park is a place where you can view individual historical milestones in a broader chronological context.
Brundlund Castle was built in the 15th century to house the administration of the town of Aabenraa. Its historical features include the rooms in the tower and the cellar prison, with graffiti left by prisoners. The castle park also features sculptures by artists from Southern Jutland and works created specifically for Aabenraa. History and art come together here, without being limited to the same period or perspective.
The town’s maritime past is at the heart of the Kulturhistorie Aabenraa Museum. It explores shipbuilding, shipyard history and voyages to distant shores in the 18th and 19th centuries. The collection includes one of Denmark’s largest collections of ship portraits and a furnished captain’s room. The Maritime Kalvø Museum is located in the former home of shipowner Jørgen Bruhn and in preserved shipyard buildings. Its three exhibitions cover the history of Kalvø, the shipyard and its ships, and Genner Bay and its surroundings.
The Frøslevlejrens Museum presents the history of the German internment camp Frøslevlejren from 1944 to 1945 and the Fårhus camp from 1945 to 1949. It offers several activities for children and young people, including an escape-room game in which participants help prisoners escape. Andholm Batteri offers a different historical focus: three bunkers from the former Sikringsstilling Nord defensive line remain almost intact there. Rundemølle, meanwhile, is a surviving watermill dating from the first half of the 13th century.
Traditions and Special Days to Visit
The Aabenraa Ringriderfest traditionally takes place on the first weekend in July. Check the exact event dates for your travel year. During the baking weekends at Egnsmuseet Jacob Michelsens GĂĄrd, bread and cakes are baked in the old oven. Visitors can talk to the baker and enjoy homemade bread or cake with coffee; check which baking weekends are scheduled before your trip. The museum is a local history museum in Aabenraa that presents the history of Southern Jutland.
Aabenraa’s location by the fjord and close to the German border is associated with Danish and German cultural influences. Depending on whether you want to focus on hiking and cycling routes, natural areas, museums or historic places, the municipality offers a range of options to consider when planning your trip.
