Discover Bunken: Dunes, beach and nature trails
Accommodation in Bunken
Dunes, forest and coast
The Bunken Dune Plantation covers 1,171 hectares and combines forest, dunes and open areas. It lies between the Skagerrak coast and the Kattegat coast. When planning your hotel stay, it may be helpful to consider in advance whether you want to focus your trip primarily on the dune landscape, the beach or nature trails.
Råbjerg Mile is part of the Bunken Dune Plantation and Denmark’s largest migrating dune. It measures approximately 1,000 metres in each direction, contains about 3.5 million cubic metres of sand and reaches a height of up to 40 metres. These measurements give an impression of the dune’s scale. The landscape also has a long history: work on the Bunken Dune Plantation began in 1887.
Those interested in the area around Råbjerg Mile will also find a marked trail through open countryside west of the dune: the North Sea Trail runs there and also passes through the Bunken Dune Plantation. Another route, the Blue Route, passes the Flagbakken viewpoint.
Beach and cultural history
You can reach Bunken Beach from the car park via a footpath of approximately 150 metres through the dune heath. The beach is designated as a bathing spot and offers sheltered places between the dunes. The nearby Hulsig–Bunken Beach is car-free—another specific feature to consider when choosing a beach.
The landscape also bears traces of history. At Fårebakke in the Bunken Dune Plantation lies the Ålbæk Bay Battery, a Second World War defensive installation with 13 concrete bunkers. The shipwreck Cronborg lies in the nearby waters off the campsite. The naval frigate sank there in 1780.
A large Natura 2000 habitat area lies west of the main road in the area around Råbjerg Mile and Hulsig Hede. It is another aspect of the area to consider if you are interested in nature reserves as well as beaches and trails.
Trails and practical information
There is drinking water and a basic overnight stop on the North Sea Trail at Milevejen. If you include the marked trail in your travel plans, you can take these points into account; check for any temporary conditions before setting out. The West Coast Trail passes a rest area north of Lillesø, where there is a barbecue area.
Bunken Halt is a good starting point for walks in the Bunken Dune Plantation. The stop is on the Skagen Line, local railway 79 between Frederikshavn and Skagen. If you plan to arrive by train, check the timetable before your trip.
Another named feature is Døde Skov in the Kirstens Rende area: this 44-hectare dog exercise forest is a place where dogs are welcome off leash. Together with the viewpoint, beach, historic installations and different routes, it offers a range of specific themes to consider when planning your trip—without every outing needing to have the same focus.
