Frederikshavn Municipality: Coast, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Frederikshavn Municipality
In Frederikshavn Municipality, varied coastlines meet marked trails, wildlife and maritime history. The 20 bathing beaches are spread across a calmer, shallow and sheltered east coast and a west coast with higher waves. Three beaches have the Blue Flag, and ten have the Badepunkt flag. Flag counts are seasonal and may change.
Coast, views and outdoor trails
The 60-metre-high CloostÄrnet observation tower offers far-reaching views: from here, you can see Skagen to the north, LÊsÞ to the east and Jyske às to the south. The highest viewing platform is 160 metres above sea level. The tower therefore complements the coastal views with a perspective in several directions.
If you prefer to explore on foot, the municipality has marked hiking and running trails through forests, rural areas and coastal landscapes. Bangsbo Dyrehave offers a concrete comparison by trail length: there are five trails ranging from 2.3 to 8 kilometres. There is also a nature playground, barbecue facilities and a shelter for meals you bring with you. This lets you combine your planned route with time outdoors without having to fit everything into a single trip.
Bangsbo Dyrehave is part of the Bangsbo Ă dal wildlife area. Its extensive deciduous forests provide habitats for free-roaming red deer, roe deer, badgers, birds of prey, woodpeckers and small birds, as well as otters, kingfishers and trout. These species give an idea of the variety of nature-related interests in the area; you can also plan a walk with a focus on the forest and wildlife.
For cyclists, GrĂžn Tur is a 60-kilometre route around Frederikshavn. It passes through moraine hills, coastal meadows, river valleys, dunes, heathland, and deciduous and coniferous forests. If you do not want to cycle the whole route, you can continue by train from Kvissel, Jerup, Rimmen (Nielstrup) and Strandby. Check transport connections before setting out to make sure your plans match the current service.
The municipality also provides guidance for other outdoor activities: a leisure map shows, among other things, places for campfires, outdoor stays, picnics and letting dogs run off leash. Free nature experiences include making campfires, spending the night outdoors, fishing for your own dinner and finding shelter from the rain. Katsig Bakker is designated for mountain biking.
Museums and maritime history
Skagens Museum focuses on the art of the Skagen Painters and houses the worldâs largest collection of their works. It also offers changing special exhibitions, an open workshop and a historic garden. As the exhibition programme changes, it is a good idea to check current dates before visiting.
Anchers Hus preserves the Ancher familyâs private art collection and the complete original furnishings of the house where Anna and Michael Ancher lived with their daughter Helga. Drachmanns Hus displays Holger Drachmannâs art collection, objects from his many travels and the houseâs original furnishings. Together, the two houses offer a tangible insight into collections and homes connected with their former residents.
KrudttÄrnet was the central structure of the Fladstrand Citadel, built in the late 17th century. Today, the tower houses a Coastal Museum exhibition about Frederikshavn Harbour; visitors can also see the cannons at the top of the tower. Frederikshavn Slipway offers another view of the maritime heritage: it is the newest and only surviving one of the four small wooden shipyards in Frederikshavn, where old ships are restored. Guided tours, open days with active workshops, talks and exhibitions tell the story of the shipyard, harbour and ships. Check specific dates in advance.
Frederikshavn Art Museum has been open since 1978 and is dedicated to modern art and crafts. One of the worldâs largest bookplate collections is on display there as a permanent exhibition. Alongside exhibitions, the museum hosts theatre, concerts, talks, an art school, art films and other events.
More historical exhibitions can be found at the manor house of Bangsbo HovedgĂ„rd: visitors can explore local history, textile exhibitions and a collection of jewellery made from human hair. A unique ship from EllingĂ„, dating from 1163, is on display in the manorâs stable. Tordenskioldsdage is also among the municipalityâs recurring events; dates and programmes change.
Excursions and trip planning
The Hirsholmene islands lie nearby, northeast of Frederikshavn. They can be reached by the small âSeadogâ ferry, whose availability is seasonal and depends on the operator. So check the connection for your planned travel date. Whether you plan your trip around hiking trails, cycling distances, coastal landscapes or museums, these varied themes provide practical starting points for planning your stay and booking a suitable hotel.
