Virksund: Harbor, Coastal Paths and Nature
Accommodation in Virksund
Virksund combines a beach on the Limfjord with coastal paths, harbor activities, and traces of ferry history. When planning your stay, these different themes may help you decide: the routes lead through the landscape, several sporting activities take center stage on the water, and museums explore local history.
Beach and Harbor
Virksund Beach lies on the Limfjord and is the starting point of the blue route. Virksund Marina is located at the Virksund Dam and is sheltered from winds from every direction.
Two shelters lie close to the water at the marina, with views across Lovns Bredning. Several barbecue areas and a modern playground are also among its facilities. The marina serves as a stopover for visiting sailors, kayakers, motorhome travelers, cyclists, and motorcyclists. This makes it a point of reference for different kinds of travel, not just sailing.
Exploring on Foot
The blue route starts at Virksund Beach and follows the coast, as well as private paths and roads through meadows, woodland, and cultural landscapes. At high water levels, or if you would like a shorter circular walk, you can take the yellow or red shortcut. These options give you a specific choice between the blue route and a shorter loop.
The starting point may also be important for your plans: Fjordruten hike no. 6 begins at Virksund Harbor, while the blue route starts at the beach. This means you can distinguish between the two routes by their starting points alone.
Water and Nature
The Virksund Sea Kayak Club offers the opportunity to kayak from the harbor. Virksund Sailing Club invites new crew members to try sailing and says there is always room for new crew. Arrange your participation with the club in advance. The sailing club also includes dinghy sailing for everyone as part of its regular weekly program.
Virksund is also home to a large winter swimming club with a sauna right by the water. Those more interested in wildlife watching can observe many different bird species and a large number of seals in the natural surroundings. So, alongside sailing and kayaking, winter swimming and wildlife are also activities in their own right.
Ferry History on the Limfjord
A rowing ferry operated between Sundstrup and Virksund from the Middle Ages until the dam was built in the 1960s. The old ferry landing, Gammel Færgemole, is still located at the dinghy harbor. Both details provide a specific connection to the former crossing over the fjord.
The Virksund Local History Museum presents the region’s long history. The nearby Tanghuset houses a small museum showcasing tools, as well as the history and importance of seaweed on the Limfjord. The museums therefore have different themes: the local history museum covers regional history, while Tanghuset focuses specifically on seaweed.
Getting Here and Cycling Routes
From June 28, 2026, the local bus service between Skive and Virksund will operate as route 410. Check the current timetable before traveling.
From Virksund, cyclists can follow the Limfjordsruten around Hjarbæk Fjord. The southern section of National Route 12 runs along Lovns Bredning toward Virksund. Check current route conditions before your ride; on National Route 12, you should also pay attention to the signs. The two routes offer different directions: the Limfjordsruten goes around Hjarbæk Fjord, while National Route 12 describes a southern section along Lovns Bredning toward Virksund.
