Følle combines a winding street village with protected historic buildings and natural attractions around the beach and wetland. The village lies on south-facing slopes that descend towards Kalø Vig. For planning your trip, you can distinguish between its different highlights: the settlement pattern and historic buildings shape its cultural character, while Følle Strand and the Følle Bund area appeal to other interests. This can help you decide whether village history, the beach or birdwatching is especially important to your choice of destination.

Historic village setting: Bygaden and Hannesminde

Most of Følle is designated as a valuable heritage area in municipal planning documents dated 14 August 2025. The settlement pattern of a winding street village is still clearly visible along Bygaden. The village setting is therefore defined not only by individual buildings: the course of the street and the village character visible along it are also part of Følle’s historic identity.

One specific example of the built heritage is Hannesminde at Bygaden 23. The building is protected and has a preservation declaration registered in the land register. Hannesminde is a well-preserved former manor farm. The main house, barns and stables, coach house and servants’ quarters are arranged around a large courtyard. This layout makes the complex’s former role as a manor farm clear: alongside the main house, several buildings with different functions together form the farmstead.

Følle Mølle is also part of the village’s history. It is Kalø’s old watermill; after 1990, it was sold to private owners. The mill adds another historic site to the picture, while Hannesminde is distinguished above all by its courtyard layout and preserved buildings.

Southern slopes and Følle Strand

The slopes where Følle lies face south and descend towards Kalø Vig. Følle Strand also faces south. It is described as a child-friendly beach with calm water. These are two distinct features of the area: the hillside setting overlooking Kalø Vig and the beach, whose orientation and water conditions give it its own character.

If cultural history is a priority when choosing your destination, the village setting, Hannesminde and Følle Mølle offer specific points of interest. If you are more focused on the beach, the stated characteristics of Følle Strand are more relevant.

Birdwatching at Følle Bund

Following its restoration, the Følle Bund area near Følle is home to many species of waterbirds and waders. A yellow-marked route leads to an observation tower, where you can watch meadow birds and waders at Følle Bund. This gives travellers interested in birdlife a distinct nature attraction alongside the historic village setting.

The birdwatching tower at Følle Bund is at the edge of the forest in the northernmost part of Hestehave Skov. It can be reached via the Molsrutestien and a connecting path. From car parks north or west of Hestehave Skov, an approximately one-kilometre walking route through the forest also leads to the tower. The approximate distance provides a guide for planning, not a specific walking time. As details about the site and access may change, check local conditions before your visit.
