Two World War II bunkers provide an unusual setting for contemporary art in Struer: Regelbau 411 presents international sound, light and video art. Together with routes along the coast and through distinctive natural areas, they offer a varied perspective on Struer Municipality.

Art, Sound and Local History

At Struer Museum, an exhibition on Bang & Olufsen brings iconic designs together with the history of a company whose designs helped make it a globally renowned brand. The Lyduniverset exhibition is aimed at families and teaches visitors about sound and technology through games, competitions and experiments. The two exhibitions approach the subject from different angles; their offerings may change, so it is worth checking the current programme before your visit.

Buchholtz’ Hus is the unique, well-preserved home of Limfjord author Johannes Buchholtz. A distinctive sound design conveys his connections with cultural figures from the region; the visitor presentation may continue to evolve. Thyholm Local History Museum, Apotekergården, also tells history through its setting: the building dates from 1657, and exhibitions in five buildings show what life was like in the past. Opening periods are seasonal.

The collection at Midt- og Vestjyllands Jernbanemuseum includes locomotives, carriages and railway objects, as well as photographs and archival material from Central and West Jutland. Access may be seasonal; check visiting options before you arrive. At Gimsinghoved, art exhibitions and musical experiences come together with a green garden, while the event programme changes. Struer Tracks is an international biennial that puts sound art in public spaces at its centre. Since individual editions do not take place continuously, check the dates if you want to plan your trip around the event.

Routes Through Landscapes and Along the Coast

Kilen brings together several landscape features: the reclaimed arm of the fjord is now a brackish-water lake and also a tunnel valley near Struer, formed by meltwater during the last Ice Age. As a protected bird sanctuary, Kilen offers opportunities for walking and nature observation. The red-marked Kilen Rundt route covers around 13.1 to 14.6 kilometres through fields, meadows, forests and wetlands. Check route markings and access in advance.

For a shorter walk, choose one of the five nature routes or loops of Odbysløjfen: they are between 1.5 and 6 kilometres long and pass through landscapes in and around Odby and Oddesund. Struer Municipality maintains their markings. From Oddesundtårn, an approximately four-kilometre nature trail runs along the coast between Oddesund and Sunddraget and crosses coastal meadows; maintenance is attributed to Struer Municipality. Den Grønne Ring runs for eight kilometres through green spaces and natural areas in Struer, connecting twelve waypoints.

The longer routes also differ in their layout: the marked nature trail on Jegindø runs for 15 kilometres around the island and is maintained by Struer Municipality. Venø Rundt covers 20 kilometres along the coasts of Venø; local volunteers take care of its maintenance. A section of the historic cattle-driving route Drivvejen passes through Struer Municipality. It is primarily a walking route, although most sections can also be cycled.

Activities on the Limfjord

For those who want to get out on the water, Cable Fun Struer offers stand-up paddleboarding, wakeboarding and water skiing for beginners and experienced users. Before travelling, check whether the activities are available during your season. Near Oddesund, you can fish for sea trout and garfish in the Limfjord. The car ferry service to Venø is Denmark’s shortest car ferry crossing; check specific service details before departure.

Oysters are also part of the region’s history: European oysters, also known as Limfjord oysters, occur in the Limfjord alongside invasive Pacific oysters. The European oyster is considered a delicacy worldwide. Venø Seafood offers a visitor experience centred on Limfjord oysters and shellfish processing. You can meet a local fishing family and learn about the production process. Operating and booking conditions may change; check them before visiting.

For more activities, there is a nine-hole disc golf course in Borgerlunden and Struer Anlæg. Struer Golf Club is located south of Oddesund and offers views of Oddesund, Nissum Bredning and Venø Bay. Holders of a valid DGU card can play the 18-hole course for a green fee; the nine-hole pay-and-play course is for anyone who would like to try golf. Hang-gliding and paragliding are also offered at the cliffs of Toftum Bjerge.
