Sødring: Coast, Nature and History
Accommodation in Sødring
If you are looking for coastal scenery, walks and local history on your trip, Sødring offers a variety of highlights. When choosing your destination, it is worth considering in advance whether you are particularly interested in nature, a walking route or the area’s historical setting. The landscape ranges from protected meadows along the Kattegat to the Gothic Sødring Kirke.
Coastal Scenery and Birdlife
Sødring Strand lies on the Kattegat coast in Randers Fjord Nature Park. East of Sødringholm Skov, the protected coastal meadows, with their branching tidal creeks, have a marsh-like character. Sødringholm Skov covers 405 hectares. The coastal meadows near Sødringholm cover 38 hectares and were protected in 1978.
The coastal meadow and the shallow waters towards Randers Fjord together form a habitat for birds. Among the birds that breed in the coastal meadows near Sødringholm are common shelducks, lapwings, redshanks, pied avocets, skylarks and meadow pipits. Seals can be seen all year round, especially near the mouth of Randers Fjord. The natural highlights also vary by location: the coastal meadows are notable for their birdlife, while seals are especially conspicuous near the fjord mouth.
The coastal waters near Sødringholm are part of the Sødring Wildlife Reserve. An Ice Age-deposited rocky reef lies off the coast at Sødringholm Skov; Boelssten is about 1 km from the coast. These landscape features complement the protected meadows with a glimpse of the region’s geological and maritime character.
Walking in the Nature Area
A walk in the Sødring nature area takes you through forest, dunes and coastal meadows. One specific route option runs from Sødring Kirke to the artificial forest lake and back. It is about four kilometres long, with good paths along the way. The approximate distance gives you a useful point of reference when planning a walk.
A distinctive natural feature of the area is Kærlighedshuset: three small beech trees form a shared canopy a few metres above the ground. The route to the forest lake and this unusual tree formation appeal to two different interests when exploring on foot: gauging the length of a route and looking out for remarkable shapes in the landscape.
Church, Manor House and Culture
Sødringholm and Sødring Kirke are historically connected as a manor house and its associated estate church. The church lies south of the manor house, close to the sea and on the north side of the mouth of Randers Fjord. Its location and connection to the manor house give the historical setting a clear local context.
Sødring Kirke was built in the first half of the 15th century. It is a Gothic church with late Gothic alterations and additions. For travellers interested in architectural history, both its medieval construction and later structural changes form part of the church’s story. Galleri Langt Ude in Sødring also welcomes visitors.
Getting There and Seasonal Planning
The Sødring Wildlife Reserve area can be reached from Randers via Highway 531. The route goes north via Øster Tørslev and Råby, then east towards Sødring. At the outlet of Randers Fjord, access to the large bird sanctuary is not permitted during the breeding season, from 1 April to 15 July. Keep this closure period in mind if you are considering visiting the bird sanctuary.
