Gjerlev: Moorland Paths and Historical Traces
Accommodation in Gjerlev
If you would like to consider both nature and history when choosing a place to stay, Gjerlev offers two distinct themes: the moorland landscape of Gjerlev Kær and its paths, and the architectural and local history of Gjerlev Church and Møgelholm. The Kær is known for its nutrient-rich fen, a path along the Øster Tørslev Å, and opportunities to observe wildlife. The historical themes range from features of the church to the ruins of an estate. This can help you decide whether the landscape and nature or the historical traces better suit your travel interests.
Nature and paths in Gjerlev Kær
Gjerlev Kær is a nutrient-rich fen. Nutrient-rich fens are among Denmark’s most species-rich plant communities. Plants and rare species found in the Kær include Sumpkællingetand, butblomstret siv, glanskapslet siv, kær-trehage, maj-gøgeurt, tormentil, hjertegræs, engblomme, and sedges. The names give an impression of the plants and species that characterize the moorland landscape.
The “Sporene i Gjerlev Kær” walking trail is in the eastern part of Gjerlev. A path through Gjerlev Kær runs alongside the Øster Tørslev Å. On a walk through the Kær, with a little luck you may spot herds of roe deer as well as foxes, hares, and mink. So, alongside the path itself, the moor’s wildlife and plant life are also key nature themes.
Gjerlev Kær has a shelter with three sleeping shelters, an indoor fire pit, and a larger fire pit outside. In summer, a toilet is freely accessible; water is available from an outdoor tap at the toilet building. As facilities may change, check the current information before your visit.
Church history and traces of Møgelholm
Gjerlev Church offers several concrete clues to its architectural and furnishing history. The tower and porch are said to have been built around 1400. In the chancel arch there is an uncovered, lime-painted coat of arms bearing the inscription “Nicolaus Jacobi 1605”. The pulpit is designed in the Rococo style and dates from 1762. The dates therefore refer to different parts and details: the approximate dating of the tower and porch, the inscription, and the pulpit.
Møgelholm also connects visible traces with different periods. The ruins of the estate can be seen on the yellow trail through Gjerlev Kær. Møgelholm burned down in 1955, was not rebuilt, and the land was divided into plots. A robber’s castle is said to have stood at the site in the 13th century. This possible castle therefore belongs to a much earlier period than the fire and the subsequent treatment of the estate.
Local history and cycling route
The Gjerlev Activity House is home to the Nørhald Local History Archive, which focuses on the local history of the area. This adds a local-history perspective to the architectural details of Gjerlev Church and the story of Møgelholm.
If you would also like to consider a cycling route alongside the walking trails, “Fortidsminder mellem fjordene” is a 60.8 km option. The route lists Gjerlev J as one of its locations. This place name refers to Gjerlev J, not Gjerlev itself. This distinguishes Gjerlev’s walking trails and nature themes from the place name on a longer cycling route.
