Thorsminde brings together the North Sea, Nissum Fjord and a coastal landscape you can explore on foot, by bike and from the water. The town also has historical sights. You can therefore choose different focuses for your stay: the beach and nature, activities in and on the water, or the history of the coast.

Beach, dunes and birdlife

Thorsminde beach is a sandy beach with dunes. An accessible path takes pedestrians and wheelchair users closer to the water. It provides a practical guide to accessing the beach, without implying that the entire beach is accessible.

The beach meadows are also part of the area’s natural character. They lie along a migratory bird route between north and south and are a Natura 2000 site for threatened birds and habitat types. Visitors interested in birdlife and protected landscapes will find a different way to experience the coast here than at the beach: the focus is on the meadows, their habitats and the birds’ migration.

Hiking and cycling routes around Nissum Fjord

From Thorsminde, you can access a red-marked hiking route of about 70 kilometres around Nissum Fjord. For cyclists, Regional Route 17 also runs around the fjord and is about 95 kilometres long. Both routes cover the same landscape, but differ in their intended mode of travel and length. You can choose between a hike and a cycling loop based on the route that suits you.

On the way to Thorsminde, Regional Route 17 runs along the dunes on a narrow spit of land. The calm Nissum Fjord lies on one side, and the surf of the North Sea on the other. The contrast between fjord and sea defines this section of the route before it reaches Thorsminde. Visitors interested in the landscape can see both bodies of water set against each other in this coastal scene.

Water activities and fishing

Water sports vary depending on which side of the coast you are on: the North Sea coast is suitable for activities such as windsurfing, while the shallow Nissum Fjord is associated with kitesurfing. Havet & Fjordens Hus offers facilities for activities on the water and on land. Visitors can catch shrimp, flatfish and crabs there while wearing waders.

Fishing is possible around Thorsminde in both the sea and the fjord from early spring to late autumn. Fish caught in these waters include herring, mackerel, sea trout and salmon. At the harbour, visitors can also fish from the piers that extend into the North Sea. A fish auction offered to tourists can also be visited.

Leisure sailors are welcome at the harbour, even though it is not a marina. The lock allows dinghies and punts to pass to and from Nissum Fjord. The harbour information is therefore relevant both to people interested in fishing and to leisure sailors and smaller boats travelling between the fjord and the harbour.

History at the museum and church

Strandingsmuseum St. George tells the story of the final voyage of the two English ships of the line, HMS St. George and HMS Defence, and their wrecks off Thorsminde at Christmas in 1811. The museum’s tower offers 360-degree views of the sea and fjord. An interactive play area lets visitors explore the seabed without getting wet.

Thorsminde Church also tells the story of the town: it is housed in a former lifeboat station and was inaugurated on 12 November 1939. The altarpiece and pulpit originally came from Thyborøn Church. Thorsminde is also home to the 1989 artwork “Nordsøhavfruen” (“North Sea Mermaid”). Together with Strandingsmuseum, the church offers a glimpse into the town’s varied historical and artistic connections.
